One app (interface) to rule them all . . .

Posted by: Bart on 25 December 2016

I've been playing a bit more with iRadio, and my kids' Spotify, and I'm now realizing that the ability to consolidate all of my sources into one interface would be REALLY NICE.  I want Alexa, a la Amazon Fire tv -- I want to say (or at least type) "Beethoven" and get all options from my home upnp server, and other sources that I have access to.

Is this what Roon brings to those who use it?

It sounds like the interface for the Core is improved over what the Naim app and other upnp servers brought, but still not "there" to what I want.

Thoughts??

As far as I can see this is what Roon is supposed to bring (except maybe a voice interface) but I've not used it so can't be sure.  But I am sure that somebody will know...

Sadly what the OP wants is a pipe dream. I think roon only plays with one online streaming service.

It costs nothing to dream!

I think Naim have taken a step in this direction with the new app, which lists other material available on Tidal beneath any music you select from your own collection. It will be interesting to see if this facility extends to other online sources, especially if Google Cast gives support for a much wider range of web streaming services on the new streaming platform. I think the Tidal catalogue is too limited to work well in this way. Not backwards compatible with existing streamers, though.

The sonos app will do exactly what you want.

Then there is hope that others will follow. I don't want any Sonos hardware however.

As mentioned above , Roon (currently) only works with Tidal. They are working to get a second streaming product on board but this looks unlikely to be either Qobuz or Spotify.

So indeed you'll just have to continue to dream.
