Muso

Posted by: Kermit on 26 December 2016

Having sold my HiFi (Naim for 25 years) a while back, I borrowed a Muso from my dealer over Christmas. The sound has been mediocre at best, with a shut in and boxy sound, however, I kept telling myself to persevere. Well, it is still the same, and in addition it started to play itself quite loudly this morning, causing me to run downstairs to try and turn the damn thing off. I used to get a similar thing happen to my Qute. Is this a fault (and yes I've checked the alarm function is off) or is this just part of the Naim ownership joy? Many thanks

Well, decision made tonight! Muso Qb had been on for just over an hour at low volume, when there is a pause in the music while I was teeing up the next album, and my wife says "thank goodness for that" which was my feeling as well. We would both rather have peace and quiet rather than listen to some more music. A shame as I love the controls, look, light up base, brushed aluminium etc, but for the money this does not tick the boxes. Now going to try a Qute2.

At least you know.

Onwards and upwards.

Really appreciate your input Harry, your point of them being overpriced really hit home with me. It mad me ask what was I getting for my money, the answer was build quality, control features, compact design, looks, but unfortunately not sound, even the little Bose Soundlink mini my wife uses in her dressing room put up a good fight. Thanks, much appreciated, and so refreshing that someone owns something and doesn't feel compelled to sing its praises as the best thing ever.

Oh it's good all right. But I don't live in a Naim tinted world - just my ears. And they don't know much about how money is used in the bigger world. A bit like children.

Besides which it looks like Naim are going to get more money off you. So that's a win win

Amazing how many people on this forum would (I'm sure, it seems) buy anything with a Naim label on it!!

We are a non secretive cult! They make we buy and then add a PS! End of story!

Well I'll be rogered!! I tried the Qb again this afternoon and had to turn it down to the point of hardly being able to hear it, due to a relentless and tiring sound, it had only been on two segments showing on the volume. Surely this thing has more ability than this, so took it up to the bedroom and sat it on a 40mm thick solid oak shelf, it had been on a marble cube. The relentless and tiring top end smoothed out, with a more natural, less forced and fuller sound, possibly due to the bed? I fished out a 40mm thick solid oak plinth I had, and put that in between the marble cube and Qb downstairs. I only managed to get 15 minutes listening in before my wife was angling to watch Coronation Street (I know, non stop party in our house) but the same natural sound returned. I'm just waiting for the dross on the TV to end and I'll get a proper extended listen. But, it seems that it is sensitive to what it sits on, will update after part 2!!

I must say that I agree with Harry regarding the sound of the Mu-so.  I have one and I am looking forward to upgrade when I find a set of speakers that my better half will accept in our smallish living room (and combine them with a s/h UnitiQute 2 or perhaps a new Atom).

Plenty of  non imposing bookshelf loudspeakers out there

If she likes Neat Iota or Kralk bc30 you might be in for a treat

For music performance, no Muso have a chance

The Muso products are not a cheap way to get a Naim system and if you buy them as such then of course you will be disappointed.  What they are is a very high quality wireless speaker with streaming capabilities put one in your bedroom, kitchen or in a Caravan and you will be very happy.  Be realistic when you buy HiFi products and use them as intended, I have just bought a Bose Soundlink Mini II to take on holiday with an ipod nano and of course when compared to what I normally listen to music on it is not great but take in context for 150 quid it is a great little travel speaker and I will enjoy listening to my music on it.

Sure, I understand the feedback, truth is, listening to music is no longer high on my priority list. I've been lucky and had a couple of UnitiQute, SuperUniti, 155/152/Dac, V1/100 etc in the past, and realise I am taking a huge downturn in sound quality. To me now, unobtrusiveness, minimal cable etc are more important than sound quality. Listening to the Qb now, it could be all I really need. It's kind of refreshing escaping the shackles of looking for ultimate sound quality.

Had heard about Neat Iota (and others) before, but Kralk BC30 was a new one. Many thanks for that tip.

I've had some floorboards up to run a network cable around upstairs and finished it off by connecting a QB in the bedroom. Not only does it sound really good for such a small box but it's given us a useful  media hub in the bedroom. I've had an iPod Bluetoothed to it and that worked well. But it is the high res stuff on the NAS that really makes you sit up and goggle. Source material quality and positioning make all the difference, even at the bottom of the Naim range.

Helen wanted it for Christmas. We did have a quick wince when reminded of the price but at least we got in before the hike. The pricing situation now might strike me as ridiculous but I’m sure that won’t stop people buying them. And if Naim can sell them at those prices then good luck to them.   We’re all MuSod out here so we don’t care. Hopefully.

Well, today I bought a Muso and a Qb. Qb in the lounge (as it fits perfectly on a marble cube (or Qb) and the Muso in the bedroom. I managed to get them at pre price hike prices, and it seemed a fairly safe bet to give them one last chance, having previously owned a Muso. That was sold off a long time ago due to a shut in and boxy sound, I wanted to love it, but the sound prevented that happening. Having been impressed (eventually) with the Qb over the last 10 days I excitedly hit play on the Muso. First thoughts were .. Naim, what have you done?

It played for 15 seconds, and the sound was a little bass rich - which I dislike. I pressed the settings button hoping the loudness was activated, and happy days, it was. I couldn't de select it quick enough, phew, a large chunk of bass gone, next room positioning, result, changed it to less than 25cm, more bass gone.

What I'm left with, quite frankly is a HUGE improvement on what my early Muso sounded. Tight (not overblown) bass, and the sound has some air and space to it, rather than congested and boxy, and shut in!! Laying in bed now, bedside lights dimmed down, and its wafting out some beautiful music. Only got to hear the Qb in the lounge very briefly due to wife watching that bloomin Coronation Street dross again. Still, all is good and gamble paid off, thanks Naim.

Kermit, I'm glad it has worked out for you in the end.  As for the Loudness being "on" by default, I too fell foul of that to begin with.  It was a bit off-putting to be frank, and I can imagine many using their Mu-Sos in total ignorance that turning the loudness to "off" can bring a huge improvement to the sound of the unit.
