NAC32.5/SNAPS, NAC52, Linn Axis and SBLs

I am (reluctantly) disposing of my living room active system, having realised I am rarely allowed to use it.  SWMBO insists that the living room is 'hers', so I really only use my study system now. (sigh)

I am handing down my Naim 52/52PS to my younger son-in-law.  My older daughter and her husband have no great interest in hifi, although she has put in a request for my Rega Radio Tuner.

At present he has my old Naim 32.5 with a SNAPS (partially modified when I owned it so that one of its outputs would power a Sony Walkman Pro).  He is using as source an NDX, and a Linn Axis/Basik/Rega MM cartridge.  The 52 does not have moving magnet boards, so he will need either a MC cartridge or MM phono preamp.  I have suggested to him that as a temporary solution he could keep the 32.5/SNAPS and use it purely as a phono preamp, running a connection from it's TAPE socket to a line input on the 52.  The easiest option would be into the RCA phono inputs on the 52, as I have changed the MC boards to line boards.  I have told him that this would not be a standard 5pin DIN to phono cable, but would need to be wired to 'record out'.  Simplest thing would be just to get a DIN to RCA tape recorder lead.   Anything wrong with that suggestion?

Also, he has asked if he could have my (immaculate) active Mk2 SBLs.  He has an old, very decrepit (IMO) pair of Mk 1s (which will probably be best used as a source of spares parts), and my SBLs have never had passive crossovers, and don't seem to have any screw holes on the back to fix them to them.  New crossovers for SBLs/SL2s are no longer available.  He assumes (I believe correctly), that he can use the crossovers from his SBLs.  How would he fit them?  Would he be OK to just (carefully) drill the appropriate holes in the back of the SBLs, or am I just blind and unable to see the screw holes?

It may be easiest just to get the MM boards for the 52. Tom Tom are very likely to have some. As to the SBL crossovers either let them dangle, with a little bit of foam to keep them from vibrating on the back, or holes can be drilled in the same places as those of the Mk1 speakers. The screws should only be tightened just enough to hold the crossovers in place, and not be fully screwed in.

SBL xovers are still available from HQ.

I'd let the crossovers dangle as HH describes, personally.  If you do want to screw them to the cabinets, the advice I received from Naim was to use Spax Screw, Steel, Posi Panhead, Black, 6g x 3/4.  You may also want to use some appropriately sized little rubber o rings to cushion the contact points where the screws are.

It'll probably make scant difference if you do otherwise, but that's the 'proper' way to do it.

Thanks to both of you.  Didn't realise you could get MM boards for the 52.  I'll pass the info on preamp and crossovers on to 'the lad' (he's nearly 40!).

Just need to pop out to B&Q tomorrow to get a 12mm masonry drill so that I can fit the Tiger Paw shelf in my study.

Will also need to go into town and deliver 2 Sound Organisation Z560 racks (now redundant) to one of the local charity shops.  Hope the local parking warden mafia will let me park outside the shop to do it!

I don't know for sure that you can get mm boards, it's just an assumption so it would be wise to check. As you could get N, S and K boards for the 72 it would make sense that the 52 can have them too.

For what it's worth, I'm 39 too, and would cheerfully consent to being called 'lad' by someone who was giving me a 52.  And a fair few other terms besides, probably

Am I right in thinking that 72/32.5/82 and 52 phono boards are the same as they hail from a similar design vintage?

Lucky fella!

Long-live the study system.

Now I've just got to figure out which leads belong to which bit ...

Let me see ...

52/52PS

135 x 4

NAXO 2.4

HiCap (moving that to my study - along with the LP12 and accoutrements)

CDS/CDPS (will box it up and probably store it in a cupboard for now)

I'm sure it will all make sense when I get round to dismantling it, and I do have the manuals to refer to.   Does mean 4 more NACA5 cables to go in my bits box. (from the Active SBLs)

Got the boxes out of the loft last night.  Some of them are a bit damp following our leaky roof a few weeks ago.  Got them in one of the spare bedrooms drying out.  Also found the boxes for the Rega 78 and my Stax 2050 headphones (no longer needed now that we only seem to have a couple of overnight stays a year by grandchildren)

All a bit of a shock to 'lose' so much gear (albeit voluntarily) at once.

Think I'll hang on to my Nakamichi CR7E for now.
