Mains lead question.

Posted by: Fisbey on 30 December 2016

I recently bought a recently serviced NAP 180 which was shipped from Italy.

The unit has all the necessary paperwork and is in very good shape, works OK too!

The mains lead that was supplied is a genuine Naim item but has a two pin plug fitted. Would it be OK just to cut this off and fit a new MK plug?

If so, is there a particular type (make) of fuse I should fit?

Many thanks.

Is it a 3 way lead.....? Not sure what a European Naim lead would consist of....

So long as your up to the task at hand that that should be OK.  A 13A fuse should be fitted to the mains plug.

Richard - Are you sure - if there is no earth connection....? Would it not be a a 2 way lead....?

The NAP 180 has a 3 core cable & a MK 13amp plug with a 13 amp fuse is the perfect replacement for the 2 pin Italian.

I do not believe in "hifi" fuses.  ..... a 13 amp fuse is a 13 amp fuse ...........

Ian, regardless of the country of destination/sale the mains lead would/should be earthed.  The European Schucko plug has the earth contact either around the circumference or within the hole for the captive third pin on the socket.

Many thanks for the replies.

I have noticed that the mains lead with the 2 pin plug is shorter than my other leads.

Existing leads being 2 metres and the 2 pin lead being just over a metre.

Is this a problem?

It should be longer.  It won't do any harm but a shame to spoil it.  I'd replace it with a new Naim mains lead.

Ianrobertm,   the NAP 180 has a IEC 320 (3 pin) switched entry plug/socket (like the current units) & it does have a 3 core cable - or lets say thats what it was supplied with.

Richard,  a lot of European countries have 2 pin power sockets, notably Italy where this 180 came from.

Mike, yes, it can be a problem. Not just in Italy either..  However, any Naim kit would have been supplied to Italy with a three core mains lead with a schucko plug to enable proper earthing of the equipment.

Its even more complicated Richard,  & even 'Shuko' is misleading.  Schuko is the German trademark thats been adopted for the German F type (CEE 7/3 socket & CEE 7/4 plug)    This stnd has a 2 pin (no 3rd pin) configuration with 2 earth connection located on the outer diameter of the plug/socket interface.    The other stnd is the French E type & although the L&N pins are the same spacing & diameter as the F type,  they are not compatible with the F type as the E type has an earth pin on the wall socket & a socket on the plug.    To overcome this the CEE 7/7 plug was developed to combine F & E types with both the outer diameter & the pin/socket earth connections.    These have adopted the Schuko name in the audio world.
