Connecting TV by digital optical audio lead to a Mu-So.

Posted by: Wils on 30 December 2016

Hi,

I bought a Digital Optical audio lead from John Lewis to connect my Mu-So to the new Sony Bravia WD603 TV.

The cable loosely fits into the socket on the bottom of the Mu-So but is not a firm fit (no click to confirm it is properly fitted) and when I turn the  Mu-So over it slips out.

Am I missing something simple here, or have I got the wrong cable, or...........

ALTERNATIVELY

As both Mu-So and TV are cable connected to our network can I run the sound through the network?

Appreciate all comments on both points

Thank for your help

Wil

Wil,

it can be a problem with optical TOSLINK connectors.  They can be fairly loose at the best of times, but there does seem to be some variation in how well they fit in various TOSLINK sockets.  I'd return it and get a different one that hopefully is a better fit.

Hi Wil ,

I've just replaced a John Lewis optical cable with a Chord C stream optical (about 40 pounds) for my parents , this goes from their TV into their Unitiqute and not only does it fit well but they have both said how much clearer the TV sound is now .

1) I use a ZAC TOSLINK OPTICAL 10M to connect a Sony TV (KD 43XD8305) to a Naim DAC. The connection on the TV side clicks in and is firm. The connection to the Naim DAC does not click in. It is loose and tends to slip out. This is not a problem in practice because I do not move the DAC around.

2) I would be surprised if this was possible.

Thank you all for your comments and advice

Having had a nose around the web have gone for a QED Performance Optical Graphite cable.

Ok, tried to fit the QED cable today, still quite loose fitting on the naim (tried both ends).

When the naim was connected I could not get any sound from the Mu-So, on either the TV speakers or sound system settings.

Given the problems I'm having with this, thinking now to connect via Analogue connector.

Appreciate any comments, as this is the first time I've tried to use optical cables, so may be missing something basic!

Thanks

Wil

Wil - Make sure your TV is outputting PCM audio (you'll find it in the settings menu). Toslink connections can be a bit hit and miss especially if the manufacturer 'decorates' the cable with heavy metal ends and a jacket which can make the connector sag in the socket. As long as it's a reasonably tight fit and doesn't drop out, you'll be fine for TV sound.

Hi Wils

My Muso is connected with optical and connection is OK, it is a cheap and cheerful cable, sounds fine for TV though. Mostly I don't  use it for TV as I can't be bothered messing around with lip sync!

The Toslink sounds better than the analog in my opinion.  Just find the right cable.good luck.

A bit Heath-Robinson, but you could do what I did with the Sony 710 DVD recorder.  When it's Toslink connector became problematic, I just moulded a bit of the universal remedy (blutak) around it to fix it more firmly.  Not very elegant, but it works!
