On CD:-

Kate Bush - The Whole Story

Posted on: 05 January 2017 by Stevee_S

A + | Transcoded DSD

(1967)

I probably should have started with his debut album rather than with "2", but at the time I didn't know if I would want to play two of his albums back to back. Great voice and an inimitable style, this album of course is half a century young this year!

Not having listened to this in years its now getting its second outing in a matter of days. This one from an original 1984 Warner Bros. CD showing very good DR and SQ.

Sorry, but what do you mean by 'DR' in this context?

Thanks, CB

Apologies Clive, I should have spelt that one out, its Dynamic Range. I ran a check using one of the features on Audirvana Plus (A+) and the DR is 15 which is good for a CD.

Pops Staples - Don't Lose This.

I seem to be in something of a soul frame of mind this afternoon.

This is as good as it gets ........... a laid back soul / blues / gospel groove from the master of laid back.

Have a listen ................. it's available on Tidal.

Thanks for taking the time to explain, Steve. Is that in dB? If so, I would have thought that was very good, given that it's a logarithmic scale.

Back to school days when it was cool to be into Caravan, Camel, Yes, Genesis, Enid, Steve Hillage and all those other great artists (all of which I still enjoy very much!)

Neil Young  -  "Prairie Wind"  (2005)  Surprise (not to me), Neil is back on Spotify.  Great musician, strange man.

want to check dynamic range of albums-vinyl/cd/download

go here

http://dr.loudness-war.info/

anything below 10 is not so good, below 7 is bad- Fleetwood Mac  Rumours initial release is around 15 but  for later re-masters  albums the Dr drops ,  the modern prediliction for compression to make them sound better on MP3/I-pods etc?

Hi again Clive as (another) Steve has just indicated above a good but not comprehensive resource for checking the dynamic range of mainly pop and rock music is the loudness wars database which is constantly being updated. As an examplethis link here shows a Rumours CD quite similar to mine in vintage, release date, label etc. where it breaks down the DR to each individual track which is averaged out to give the album's DR. Yes its in decibels as you thought.

Keep on going with the Canterbury scene

An interesting site, I can see I'm going to waste many an hour searching through it.

This record is one of my favourites, though it's not played much these days. He's a local boy too.

Bach cantatas from UnitiServ CD rips.

from Bach Complete Works boxed set

... didn't realise there are bloody 60 CDs of cantatas alone !

IMO his cantatas are one of the heights of human achievement.

Another wonderful blast from the past.

I think this came next after St Dunstans, although it wasn't released until 1994. Quite sparse arrangements, but still delightful. It is Caravan after all!
