Robbie Robertson. Eponymous solo debut on DMM vinyl from 1987. Don't play this one often, but It's sounding better than ever tonight and will get more attention in the future.

A selection of Schumann songs by Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans. His velvety voice carries these performances. On CD.

Cheers

Starting this morning with Rachmaninov.

A + 3 | Tidal Masters

(1972)

It's been a very long while since I've listened to this album, the fact that it's available as a Tidal Hi-Res Master tempted me to play it. This was her breakthrough album and like CSN (played earlier) it's sounding rather fine even if the MQA does trompe l'oreille

Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Getaway. On vinyl from 2016. It's kinda loud, compressed, and bass heavy - but isn't that the sound of the RHCP's? Musically a very good album that's getting more enjoyable with each listen.

You're up late Randy, its a cracking album, enjoy!

Radio Paradise - I've had a lie in and can't choose what to listen to for half an hour. Having a quick cuppa before going out for a bike ride. Nice easy day for me today, and as I'm in the house alone tonight, an evening of vinyl to look forward to!

Thanks for the reminder and mini write up on the album - I've been meaning to get this for a while. Now in my Qobuz favourites!

A rare SACD issue of Ashkenazy's recording of Rachmaninov's Moments Musicaux, which I've had for many years. I've long felt this is his best Rachmaninov recording, and hearing the SACD layer for the first time, the sound is awesome. This is one of my desert island discs.

Cheers

Adding these notes referring to the challenges of remastering (in 2011) of No Secrets for 24K CD for anyone that my be interested:

Remastering Carly Simon “No Secrets” was really fun, it is one of my favorite albums of all time, but it presented several challenges. The album was produced by Richard Perry (also known for Rod Stewart and Ringo Starr, among many others) and recorded by ace engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable (Elton John, Nilsson) at Trident in London. It was mixed partly at Trident and partly at AIR studios, also in London, and also by Bill Schnee (of Sheffield Lab, Direct-to-Disk fame) at Sound Labs in L.A.

It would have presented enough of a challenge if that alone were the situation, but just to make things more complicated, some of the final mixes were composites of mixes from more than one studio inter-cut together. This is clearly visible (not to mention audible) because the tape formulation, from at least one of the British studios, has bright orange backing (could be BASF, AGFA, or EMI tape, I’ve seen it many times), and the American tape has black backing, presumably 3M 206. Both types appear in some songs.

When comparing the tape to an original Doug Sax, The Mastering Lab, mastered vinyl it became obvious that he had his hands full cutting this beast. Levels and EQ have to be adjusted constantly to compensate for the change in sound between the different studios' mixes and to match up the pieces from different studios within some songs as mentioned earlier.

It kept me on my toes as I went back and forth between the LP and the tape taking copious notes. Doug used a compressor to make the vinyl version louder and I did not. I think you will like the results. It is a great sounding recording. The previous CD versions appear to have been mastered from an EQ copy as they match the LP right down to the compression.

Happy listening!

A new 13CD box set, called Delectus, will feature all of Vangelis‘ Vertigo and Polydor albums – including the Oscar winning Chariots Of Fire – newly remastered (from the original first generation master tapes) ever under the legendary composer’s own supervision.

As well as the albums Earth, L’Apocalypse Des Animaux,  China, See You Later, Antarctica, Mask, Opera SauvageChariots of Fire, Soil Festivities and Invisible Connections, Delectus also features recordings with Jon Anderson as ‘Jon & Vangelis’. These are Short Stories, The Friends of Mister Cairo, and Private Collection. Additionally, this set features four bonus tracks, one of which, Neighbours Above (on the See You Later disc) is previously unreleased.

Delectus is presented as an outer box which contain two large die-cut wallets to hold all of the discs and a 64-page book, with essays, and rare photos. The image above suggests a poster may be included as well.

Speaking about the new box, Vangelis said “I always welcome remastering my old work for two basic reasons. Firstly, I get the opportunity to bring the sounds to today’s standards, secondly, it gives me the chance to go through the experiences and memories of the time.”

Continuing the Ellington mood. I'm currently learning an arrangement of 'In a Sentimental Mood' for guitar, so this is most appropriate.

1974 - Vinyl - U.K. First pressing...

Title track is pure Purple  and Coverdale's bluesy and powerful voice on Mistreated just about saves the album.

Posted on: 11 March 2017 by Clive B

By way of Ellington and Coltrane to Coltrane blues with McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones.
