2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

(1995) CD. After the uplifting musings of Joy Division, felt like some Morphine. Another one I haven't listened to in a long while. Very enjoyable.
I am a massive fan of this band, Pat. Sadly Mark had to pass away the way he did just like Ian. Sorry for editing your post but just the mention of U2 gives me convulsions!

Hi Tony,
Haha! I have noticed U2 is not a very popular band here.
Good to know of another Morphine fan. One of the bands I wish I had seen live.

John Hicks was an exceptional pianist whom I came across only (in my ignorance) half a year ago while browsing on the Japanese Venus Jazz site.

Since then, we have six of his discs parked on our coffee table, all going through heavy rotations. For anyone who is interested in exploring a less known great talent.

(9th March)
SHOWDOWN | Dirtwire
Their latest release which should please the few Dirtwire fans here. Only a few tracks in and its carrying on their tremendous swamptronica, world music bluesy style.

Thank you Haim (and Jeroen) for the heads up,
Southern Avenue - Southern Avenue
I can't remember who recommended this on here, but whoever it was I would like to thank you Sir (or Madam). This is a belter of an album by a stonking band (all IMHO of course). Billed as a (modern) blues band, they have been better described as Rock 'n' Soul. Tierinii Jackson, their young lead singer is superb, occasionally Joss Stone-esqe (might I suggest even better) but to compare her to another does her talent an injustice. She is unique and very, very talented, and so are the rest of the band. Great melodies and songwriting simply add to my enjoyment of this album. No filler tracks, just kick-a*s music from beginning to end.
It is on Tidal if you fancy a listen, which I would thouroughly recommend you do if this is your bag.
16/44 WAV. beautifully written and recorded IMO

Back in the 90's I was solicited by mail and bought some of his recordings from Reservoir Records, not sure they are still in business, might be worth checking as another source. Found this link: http://www.reservoirmusic.com/about.html I have several Kenny Barron, a Nick Brignola with Hicks on piano , also see the "piano series" at the top of the page. best, Jeff A
just finishing:
Anita Baker - "Composition" (1990) On CD, prompted by a post in the past few days of her "Rapture" album.
top of the pile:
Nick Brignola (sax) - "Like Old Times" (1994) On Reservoir Records CD, Claudio Roditi-trumpet, George Mraz-bass, John Hicks-piano, Dick Berk-drums
followed by:
Don Sickler (trumpet) - "The Music Of Kenny Dorham" (1994) On Reservoir Records CD with Jimmy Heath-tenor sax, Cedar Walton-piano, Ron Carter-bass, and Billy Higgins-drums.

One of my all time favorites.
Replaced my 1979 copy of London Calling some time ago as it was totally knackered! Obviously I didn't look after it when I was younger. One of my favourite LPs and one that I return to on a fairly regular basis.

I have several CD's of John Hicks. 'Some other time' is probably my favorite. It's a trio recording with two solo pieces.

Jeroen.

And thank you for posting this. I just had a listen to this on Tidal. And indeed what a wonderfull album this is.
Vinyl. This is an LP/band that a lot of people don't seem to like, but for me they really hit the spot when I'm in the right mood.
The Eagles - Hotel California
24/192 Flac
Porcupine Tree - Insignificance
