Back to Blue Note with Lee Morgan.

Reviews focus on her sometimes idiosyncratic choices of tempo and drawn out notes (rubato), but what I find unique about this interpretation is her progression through these works, from relatively soft-focused with restrained left hand and plenty of pedal, to darker and edgier, even if the underlying preludes don't suggest such a progression by themselves. It means comparing prelude by prelude doesn't do her any favours (but take the Raindrop prelude as an example of her art, encompassed in a single miniature). Also technically, nothing to complain but nothing stands out, either - that's not the point. Overall, I like this performance very much, and rate it close to other personal preferences such as Demidenko (Onyx), Pogorelich (DG), Arrau (Philips) and Pires (DG).

Listening to the SACD layer on the disc - beats the 12/192 download on my system!

Cheers

EJ

For a change of mood. This is a lovely album and I can't make up my mind whether I prefer this or Currency Of Man as her best album.

1974 - vinyl...

On original 1994 CD. A masterpiece from a hugely influential  East London band, for whom the term "post rock" was invented. I haven't heard this in 20 years. It's still as good as I remember it:

Scum by Bark Psychosis. This is the '92 CD single version of this extraordinary 23-minute 12" single. Makes Talk Talk's Sprit of Eden sound like Bananarama:

Ian Siegal - Meat & Potatoes.

Great album from one of the UK's leading blues performers ................ any Howlin' Wolf fans out there will absolutely love just about anything from Ian Siegal.

I've seen him live a couple of times ...........if you ever get the opportunity to see him, GO, as he's even better live.
