What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Andrew Bird - Apocrypha
(2007) Streaming.
I listened to 'Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of...' yesterday and wanted to hear some more Andrew Bird today. Haven't listened to this in a long time.
While listening to "Armchair" his voice reminded me of Jeff Buckley.
Z Z TOP - Tres Hombres.
Sun's out in North Yorks. today, and this chunk of Texas blues from seƱor Gibbons and chums never fails to put a grin on my face.
I don't listen that much to Phil Collins, but it's nice music.

Just finished playing this recently download EP, it's a pretty good taster but 'fuzzy' rock rather than the full blown hard psych rock that I was hoping for. I Will be trying it again and having a listen to their full album on Bandcamp.

Meat Loaf's Muse. Mick Ronson. Ian Hunter. Bob Clearmountain.
You know what you're going to get and you get lots of it.
Joe Bonamassa - An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House.
Well recorded, this brings a completely new perspective to some of his best known tunes; a stunning live album, IMHO.
I really like the Bach Cantatas. I have several CD's with Cantatas by Bach. A few weeks ago I purchased John Eliot Gardiner's boxset of Bach Cantatas. The beauty of this boxset is that by listening to each CD (I'm now at CD 7 of 56), I get to hear Cantatas I never heard before. Such as the ones BWV 14, 26 and 81. This is beautiful music, well recorded and very well performed.
I bought this when it came out in 1978. It was also the first & my first commercially produced cd. Still have a real soft spot for it.

Thanks Graeme I'd totally forgotten about 'the first' CD and looked yours up on the usual very reliable discogs and found two learned comments.

I agree that this is the first release in cd. Actually 50 titles were simultaneously released and consequently numbered but this one just happened to be the first in that numbering. The notes in this submission are VERY confusing as they suggest there was a repress of that first release.

If I am right, this is the first Compact Disc officially released in the world.
Reached the shops in the 1st of October, 1982, together with the Sony's CD player CDP-101 in Japan.
That was 30 years ago...

Interesting. Being an early-as-it-gets pressing it hasn't been brickwalled to death. I bet the 'remasters' sound 'orrible!

Quite a while since I've played this particular recording of Hotel California: a 24/192 download. Nice to see the High Def indicator on the nDAC illuminated. I've made some upgrades to my system since last playing it so was interested to hear this recording again. A high def version at 24/192 of this classic album should be the dog's bo**cks, shouldn't it?
Erm, no. It sounds more 'hi-fi' and is more detailed, but it reminded me of those amps from the 80's that had a loudness setting. The harsh truth is that my old CD recording, on the Asylum label, while sounding muddier and less detailed, seems to have more coherence and is the more enjoyable.
Still, if I really want to listen to a top-notch recording of the song Hotel California I reach for my Hell Freezes Over CD. Now that sets a very high bar.

Good post Mike and I agree totally with your "findings". It is as if everything is boosted, in the way you describe it as being like a loudness setting, very obvious when you play the Hi-Res back to back with a redbook rip or straight CD. Fortunately not all Hi-res albums suffer in the same way. Hell Freezes Over as you might remember is also a favourite of mine, I have a redbook and SHMCD of HFO and although its more compressed than the original it does sound mighty fine!
Cheers

Talk of the devil... and playing the redbook Geffen Records original.

I have the same experience with some other albums as well. Thriller of Michael Jackson is a similar dissapointment for me...., it still depends a lot on recording and mastering.
I see a couple of reviews of the new album of Deep Purple dripping in and they all refer to it as one of the best efforts of the last years, and while it's most probably their last studio album, I am awaiting with excitement. The EP gives a promising indication of what might be expected....

Bert, like you I am looking forward to this one.

Just previewed it and purchased . Great.
My 1st JB album.
Do you like jazz, do you like to enjoy, do. you don't want your music to be too much "artistic", but you like a new perspective, then give this guy a try......., he is good.....
I was cycling in Ladakh a few years ago and, to pass the time as we struggled up another mountain pass, I got talking to one of the other members of our group about music. He was a music enthusiast and a real classical music aficionado who enthused about this album. He loved it so much that he insisted that I hear it too and within a couple of weeks of arriving home he'd bought it and had it delivered to me. He was absolutely right. There's so much intensity in the playing. It's so absorbing.
Op. 132 as recorded by the Takacs quartet (which I also have and can confirm is not as magical as this version) was played this morning on BBC Radio 3, so I was reminded to play this version. It was recorded around 1940, but the sound is excellent. It is such beautiful music that even you hifi enthusiasts would accept it and enjoy it.
Sadly, the man who sent it to me died about a year later.
16/44 WAV. Playing this in anticipation of my Robert Cray and Jo Bonamassa albums arriving.
i think I need to get a lot more 'Blues' material but it's finding what I like. Many i preview I don't like as the male vocal for me ruins the excellent guitar playing (please don't shoot me)
love this album though!

There'll be no stopping you now, since once you're hooked, you'll no doubt want to hear some of the same songs ramped up to Joe's usual blues rock stylee!
I'm something of a fan, so post on here if you want any pointers.

Nothing wrong with expressing your opinion here Anton, I'm sure nobody will shoot you down even if they disagree. That Bonamassa Cray album you have ordered is tremendous.
