2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Ellis Marsalis - Duke in Blue
Last one for tonight. Talk about a musical family: Father Ellis and sons Branford and Wynton.

After Dave Marshall's and other recent recommendations I've just finished streaming this and whole heartedly agree with all their comments, good album fabulous music.
A bit late to this. First play - so far very good
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): RafaĆ Blechacz (piano)
Italian Concerto in F major BWV 971 | Partita No. 1 in B-flat major BWV 825 | Four Duets | Fantasia and Fugue in A minor BWV 944 | Partita No. 3 in A minor BWV 827 | Jesus bleibet meine Freude
Assertive, confident, highly charged, speedy - this is my overall impression of the Bach here. That is until the Dame Myra Hess transcription of the chorale from the Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben Cantata at the end. Suddenly we hear the music of reflection and compassion. Well this isn't entirely true of everything else. There are many fine moments to speak of. It is only in the difference or comparison of different kinds of music. From the more showy, muscular to a nice encore.
Another fine release from Blechacz in what we can expect as highly competent playing.

Because its one of my all time favourite albums throughout the 70's.

My favourite EWF album
Went to my local HMV this weekend and bought a 5 disc collection of Earth Wind & Fire. This disc was part of that collection so think I will join you.
D'Angelo - Voodoo.
Why?
'Cos it's another one that's been unplayed for ages .......... a mixture of soul, R 'n B and funk, well recorded, deserves a listen ......... and it's available via Tidal .......... so, why not?

On vinyl...
What do you think of this, Andy? It's sitting in my river 'basket' but I haven't yet completed the transaction.
IMHO it is a very good album and if you are a fan of hers certainly worth buying.
Thanks Ewemon. Typically the price has gone up on the river, but it still looks like a good price for the vinyl.

Interested to see that this is an SHMCD version - be interested to hear your views on the sound vs standard CD...
Led Zepp IV
Todays listening.
Radiohead-A Moon Shaped Pool
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893): Mikhail Pletnev (piano)
18 Pieces op. 72 for piano plus Chopin: Nocturne No. 20 in c-sharp minor, op. posth. (Live)
Pletnev is a pianist that for me simply doesn't play the notes. Somehow, he has that rare gift of understanding the music behind the notes and what comes through as a result to the listener is genuine and entrancing.
These 18 Pieces are the last solo piano works written by Tchaikovsky in the year he died.
Steely Dan. Pretzel Logic. Original ABC Records pressing from 1974. My favorite Dan album and the SQ is sublime.

More ambient, electronic sci-fi soundscapes.
Another run of the new Adelson, only in this case hires flac files, from a DVD-R. I merged the individual download files into bigger chunks, per act, to circumvent my player's lack of gapless. Requires some investing in XLD, but works a treat - the lack of track numbering is a small nuisance but in return, I get a whole opera - or two - on a single disc.
cheers
