What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Abbey sings Billie - Qobuz Enja sale. CD2 16/44.1 flac.
Mastodon-Emperor of Sand
Some early Aimee (1988).
On CD:-
Jamiroquai - Automaton
Lee Morgan - Tom Cat. 2006 RVG CD-rip. Rec. 1964, rel. 1981!
Franz Schubert (1797-1828): Louis Schwizgebel (piano)
Piano Sonata No. 19 in c-minor, D.958 | Piano Sonata No. 16 in a-minor, D.845
My first recording from Louis Schwizgebel and it won't be my last. A solid recording under the steady, unwavering hands of Schwizgebel. His choice of a Yamaha piano is my only reservation. Fine enough for most ears I am much too picky about these things. Strangely enough though the two youtube samples below are both played on a Steinway. To these ears there is a difference (albeit a small difference but the character is different). On the clips Schwizgebel seems more open and warmer vs. the recording where he seems more careful and unwilling to take risks.
Yo Yo Ma/ Maazel/Berliner
Dvořák Cello Concerto in B minor, B.191 Op.104
1986 Recording
Got triggered by Florestan. A fine reading of these pieces..
George Harrison. Brainwashed. On CD from 2002. A brilliant swansong and I gain a greater appreciation for George's songwriting, artistry and virtuosity on the guitar with each listen. An album that can be enjoyed lightly or immersively with equal merit.
Reiner/CSO: Prokofiev Lt. Kije
This is one of the best Kije. And this *antique* RCA Gold Seal CD ( released back in the late 80s ) sounds much better than most reissue LPs or CDs. Hard to believe this was recorded 60 years ago!
Tracks 1-3
Jackie McLean - alto saxophone
Donald Byrd - trumpet
Sonny Clark - piano (#2-3)
Paul Chambers - bass
Philly Joe Jones - drums
Tracks 4-9
Jackie McLean - alto saxophone
Tina Brooks - tenor saxophone
Blue Mitchell - trumpet
Kenny Drew - piano
Paul Chambers - bass
Art Taylor - drums
Jackie's Bag was recorded in Jan 1959 at Hackensack New Jersey, in the early "experimental" stereo spread that's a bit hard panned, with bass and drums only on the right channel. The recordings after the summer of 59 were done with the revised positioning, at the new Rudy Van Gelder Englewood Cliffs studio.
Music Matters 2017 reissue of the 1961 Blue Note Records release.
CD15 of John Elliot Gardiner's "Bach Pilgrimage" boxset. These are Cantatas no 150, 67, 42 and 158.
Very beatiful music.
JANIS JOPLIN Pearl (1971 US 10-track vinyl. Her second and final solo studio album which includes 'Move Over', 'Mercedes Benz' and the number one hit 'Me And Bobby McGee'. This is a classic.

Arrived here this morning and on it's first play : )
Debs
Oh dear! ...my first play yesterday didn't go to plan : (
Firstly this CD is faulty, i think it has a slight dish warp that prevents it from sitting central in the player, a few attempts to get started and it can just about play along albeit with accompanying mechanism chuffing sound emitting from CD player - sounds a bit like a steam train. So this CD will be returned for refund.
Secondly, this duo was recorded in Oude Dorpskerk Bunnik, The Netherlands [Oct 2015] which is a church with very poor recording acoustics. Even with the CD playing on limp along mode one can hear enough reverb to distance the listener too far from the warm nature and quality of the viola da gamba sound.
I'm no stranger to the excellence viol play of Paolo Pandolfo, and i'm sure along with his companion, Rob Smith they are doing a fine job with this rendition, it's just a shame they didn't do it in a proper recording studio.
Debs
Disc: 1
Disc: 2
Beck-Morning Phase
Van Morrison-Moondance
(1981)
I just fancied a quick burst of Zappa and Five, Five, Five is an excellent piece of guitar playing.
Champion Jack Dupree - Blues From The Gutter
Discovered this on my exploration of the Blues (probably a Ewemon recommendation). This to me is the blues. Some of the lyrics are humorous, some are rather non-PC by today's standards. 'All done in the best paaassable taste...' as Kenny used to say.
Love it!
Nice piano trio by Dutch bass player Jasper Somsen.
