What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Steven Wilson - Cover Version, on vinyl...
On vinyl...
Finishing the evening off with this. A great album and a nice sounding one too. The final track 'Small Hours' is beautifully atmospheric with its outdoor recording capturing the late night sound of nature from the nearby lake. Phill Brown's book, 'Are We Still Rolling' has a chapter on the recording this album which is a fascinating read (the whole book is an excellent BTW)
John Martyn - One World
Another album that I've had and enjoyed for many years. I've one or two of Oleta's albums but this remains my favourite.

I must have a listen to this. Always liked her when she worked with Tears For Fears on 'The Seeds Of Love' album but never explored her work. Hello Amazon...
James Vincent McMorrow - "We Move" (2016)
Slightly longer session than planned (sorry Mrs n). MDS's Oleta Adams post reminded me of this album so it's getting a quick play. Still remember buying this originally on cassette tape from Our Price
Tears For Fears - The Seeds Of Love
David Gilmour - Live in Gdansk.
Signing off, with what is, IHMO, the best live "Floyd" album ......... disc 2, especially.
This just floats around, gradually working its spell...
Du Pre/Bareboi/CSO: Dvorak Cello Concerto
She might not be technically polished as Starker, but packed with so much emotions, her communication skill surpasses many. Against the gorgeous sounding CSO, I also much prefer this intimate recording perspective where Carson Taylor ( engineer ) put de Pre right in front much more so than the Dorati/LSO set where at times it seems Dorati wanting to *outdo* Starker.

You keep posting this one. It must be a great follow up album.
Frédéric François Chopin (1810-1849): Julien Brocal (piano)
24 Préludes Op. 28 | Sonata No. 2, Op. 35
Being a protege of Maria João Pires is probably a good thing for anyone trying to make it in this world as a pianist. As far as debut albums go this one is pretty good. A solid performance for the most part. My quibbles are choice of a Yamaha piano and some slight over pedalling from time to time. While the performance is very strong, I feel that what hinders it is that certain hard to define thing called character. Possibly this is something that comes only with age to give it that certain mystic and charisma.
One day I hope to do a real in-depth review / assessment of all the Chopin Préludes sets I own to get a better sense of who is who and who does what. Too many now to remember all the details - similarities / differences. In general though, this is a decent set.
Celbidache/Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della Rai
Brahms Symphony 1
In spite the poor live recording ( rec. 1959 ), Celi's dynamic and vivid direction is coming through well. I wish I could have attended this concert. Amasing reading via colours, texture and speed, it never gets dull.
HARVEY MANDEL Games Guitars Play (Psychedelic Blues-Rock from 1969 Includes a great cover of Horace Silver's 'Senor Blues'.
2016 CD...
Via Tidal.
Wanted to listen to some Schubert piano trios and found this album.
Violin Concerto in E, BWV 1042 - Szeryng/ASMF/Marriner, June 1976 on Philips.

Because it is rather good.
A fantastic record - nearly as good as Civilians which is his masterpiece, I think.
'Sign' is phenomenally good, my favourite JH track.
A + 3 | WAV
(1987)
Because this thirty year old classic arrived for a ripping this morning and is now back in the collection and getting a spin.
