“In production we referred to Vol. 1 as the fuzz dungeon, and Vol. 2 as the crystal palace,” guitarist Ripley Johnson explains. “The darkness of Vol. 1 gave birth to the light of Vol. 2. We had to have both elements in order to complete the cycle." - Moon Duo Comment

Harry Manx - Dog My Cat (Don't you just love that album title!)

I was recently introduced to this fine artist (thanks Stevee) and am exploring his albums. Although I think I just prefer his Wise and Otherwise album, this too is a fine piece of work, both albums recommended by Ewemon - cheers.

Think I am gonna have to visit the big river!

I'm delighted that you're enjoying his work Nigel. Most of it is available on Tidal as you know, so its easy to try before you buy. Do try Mantras for Madman and indeed the rest of his albums. Its hard to understand he isn't better known, perhaps fora like this can help to change that.

Before you go splashing the cash on the big river it might be worth checking prices at Discogs.com which seem to be better for Harry Manx at the moment.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244

Otto Klemperer, Peter Pears, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Christa Ludwig, Nocolai Gedda, Walter Berry, Philharmonia Choir & Orchestra

It is Good Friday and I have saved the most reverential version of the Matthäus-Passion for today.  There are many masterpieces around and it would be a perplexing exercise to rank them but Matthäus-Passion has to be one of the greatest works ever composed.

For those who may only look for one version of these work to have it represented in your library I would warn you not to make it this one.  Like Donald Trump, Dr. Otto Klemperer is taking on 'political correctness' head on here and so it is not without some controversy.  Decades ago, when I first bought this I could not stand it either and so sided with the court of popular opinion too in my wishy washy ignorance.  After growing up, I now love this recording more and more every year and see how important it is (for me).

Considering the topic, I think Klemperer is correct in not flippantly burning through the work like it is some sort of horserace.  I have too many recent recordings like this and I can't listen to them really (which is a complete reversal to how I started with this work).  Probably one of the longest on record you cannot help but sense the added solemnity, gravity and funereal pace.  Yes, you have to be in the right frame of mind and once you understand this it becomes an experience like no other.  The soloist here are all second to none as well.

It is funny how life is.  As a youth, it was all about power and quickness and all the fitting terms aligned with youthfulness.  In fact, I was somewhat insulted as a teenager when my piano teacher told me that your job now is to learn the notes.  You won't really begin to understand Bach (and others) until you are at least forty.  Now well past this age, I really understand his advise except that he was wrong about the age.  It is a lifelong pursuit and journey.  One gets wiser in realizing that one knows nothing really and this is truly humbling.

So in an age of arrogance (I know everything because I can google) and attention deficit disorder, I cherish this recording.  Again, it is not for the faint of heart.  It takes a severe amount of commitment and resolve.  The fact is that if you compare this recording to say, McCreesh, I'll bet there is at least one hour difference.  This is a massive difference and the Klemperer is clearly not for everyone.

Steve, yes, I can't understand how HM has passed me by for so long. I am indeed exploring his stuff on Tidal but will certainly check out Discogs.com - thanks for the tip.

For the record this forum, and in particular this thread, has introduced me to so much great music and has literally transformed my collection - I kid you not. Thanks to all who post on here.

Fink - Biscuits For Breakfast.

Apologies for posting this one yet again, but it's quite simply worth another listen, (now that I've succeeded in getting newly discovered Goldfrapp off "play"), a very good album.

I discovered Fink quite recently, thanks to a shout on here, and yes, it's on Tidal, so come on, join in, you won't be disappointed.

Off to watch tonight's footy shortly.

Yep I can never understand why he isn't better known. I have been posting his covers on here since I started posting. My version of Dog My Cat has the original cover which is completely different to the one above.
