What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
More of a jazz mood going on right now, starting off with this one from Ray Brown, with Emily Remler on guitar, of course.
Jumping forward now several years to the Phil Collins-dominated Genesis era. I haven't played this in a while and while it doesn't carry for me the magic of the classic Genesis albums, and is obviously more 'commercial, I still enjoy this one, with its faster tempo. And, who can keep still when the title song belts out?
Brian Eno with Jon Hopkins & Leo Abrahams - Small Craft on a Milk Sea
Kind of ambient, but stirred up a bit.

HH,
It is a very good album but not much of a novelty if you already heard their previous two ('Nostalghia' and 'Tarkovsky Quartet'), both on ECM as well. My favorite is Nostalghia which came out first in 2005. By the way, do you have Couturier's solo album with the similar title : 'Un Jour Si Blanc':

One of those albums i came to rather late in the day. I always liked 'At Seventeen' whenever i heard it on the radio so i finally bought the album. Good late evening listening.
Janis Ian - Between The Lines
The xx - I See You
Second play. They've moved the game on.

Perhaps not so much of a novelty, as I do have the other two. Interesting that you mention Un Jour Si Blanc, which I've just bought but not downloaded yet. I read a review that said it was also inspired by Tarkovsky, and I'll be interested to hear it. There's just something about the new album that I find particularly entrancing, and the high resolution recording may be playing a part.

Great - I only discovered this was out earlier today when I was trying to order the new Thomasz Stanko - now both are ordered!
my nephew, who is learning blues guitar came over to listen to my system last Friday -- he brought with him 180g of Robert Johnson 'Complete Collection' and Nina Simone. He claims rather kindly, that the reason he likes to listen to blues records on my system is that he can pick up the chords much more easily -- and this helps him -- he is actually getting quite good with his guitar.
we didnt get a chance to play this vinyl NS -- but i am planning to make amends tonite:
enjoy...

Itzhak Perlamn (violin) | Martha Argerich (piano)
Robert Schumann (1810-1856): Sonata for Piano & Violin No. 1 in a-minor, op. 105 | Drei Fantasiestuecke for Piano & Violin, Op. 73
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Scherzo in c-minor for the F-A-E Sonata, WoO 2
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): Sonata for Keyboard and Violin No. 4 in c-minor, BWV 1017
The Schumann Sonata here was actually recorded in 1998 and the remaining pieces were recorded in March 2016. I think these two make for a nice pairing. It is amazing that Martha had not ever played the Brahms or the Bach prior to this album and so this is a good thing.
Sergey Prokofiev (1881-1953): Alexander Melnikov (piano)
Volume 1: Piano Sonata No. 2 Op. 14 | Piano Sonata No. 6 Op. 82 | Piano Sonata No. 8 Op. 84
Well, Melnikov is certainly different than any other interpretation of Prokofiev that I know of. I'm actually undecided as to whether I like it or not yet.

Starting this morning with classical piano music performed by Evgeny Kissin.

(2008)
Well recorded with fine SQ as is the way with this record label. There has been comment made that (with the exception of the 2nd lute suite) there is little or no bass reproduction (reduced by the engineers) "making this sound more Renaissance than Baroque". Certainly different to my other Bach lute CD recordings by Hopkinson Smith but not in a bad way, enjoyable and a pleasure to find on Tidal.
Gardiner's star-cast St Matthew Passion

Gentle start to the the Bank Holiday...
The gentle pianist! What a great artist. Unique in his own way.
