What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

I didn’t care for this session when I first heard it 15+ years ago. Lately I’ve had a change of heart. If you’re expecting Elvin to sound like the Coltrane Quartet days you’ll be disappointed, yet I find his playing here to be (subtly) wonderful. Is Dave Holland ever less than phenomenal? Some really great Frisell original compositions plus a few covers (Hard Times, Moon River) mixed in.

Bill Frisell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones

No particular reason to listen to the Vespro at Easter, but this is an exciting and brand new recording of Monteverdi's     masterwork of sacred music, in its own way no less impressive than Bach's St Matthew Passion.

Cheers

His best album yet.  Whap the volume up and annoy the neighbours.

One for you Dave.

Kuma, the vinyl of this is one of the next things I planned on ordering. I would say that the sound quality is not the worst I have heard but certainly not the best.  Now the artists and especially the music (I love this program) is enough for me to overlook anything.  The problem with me is that I am a 'super hypercritical listener' when it comes to the piano.  It takes a lot to please me.  The violin here is very nice. The recording overall is a bit too forward for my taste.  The biggest issue though for me is the piano sound.  A little too bloomy or wooden sounding.  I think the fault is the room and the setup?  The 1998 live portion (Schumann sonata) is somewhat better or should I say honest?  It is quite forward but it seems realistic except for in the 3rd movement where in some of the louder accents in the piano it loses its composure. I think watching this will explain the room situation.  Some may like it but I personally like to control the beast in the room a little better (the piano) so that it has a softer more focused sound.  Maybe a different room with better acoustic (not so lively), lower the lid on the piano etc.)

Doug,

Thanks for your detailed reply. Interesting you say the older 90s live recording sound better than the new one. I don't have much faith in Warner's new releases ( DG's new releases are much better mostly ) so not expecting much. ( it is curious this album was not released under DG )

Not to worry.

I just finshed listening to Mehta/NYP Brahms Symphony No.3.

Right out of gate, the door does not burst open and notes are DOA. This is one of shorter reading yet it feels a lot longer due to lack of tension management. I’d take Lenny/NYP over this.

Robert Plant. The Principle Of Moments. On vinyl from 1983. Always a great listen as much for the music as the big, dynamic soundstage.

Robert Plant | Alison Krauss. Raising Sand. On CD from 2007. Definitely has that T-Bone Burnett production signature to it - warm and tubey with oodles of reverb and compression. In this case it comes off a bit on the melancholy side. Maybe I like my tempo a little more upbeat.

Ghosts of Highway 20 by Lucinda Williams.

Had it a while and highly recommended if you like LW. A real grower for me. Well recorded and every track is good.

Thanks for posting this one (and the others by François Couturier) Haim.

This is a new artist for me. I really like his music and it's on my shopping list.

Jeroen.

Tim Burgess from The Charlatans takes shoegazing to the next level.

fronting helm for the project band  'Seahawks.   This album 'Paradise Freaks' is like being on holiday, wearing deck shoes on a boat with long hair and standing looking down at them, lost in a haze of existential angst about the concept of luxury.

Any mention of Tim Burgess makes me think of Cocainus

Claude Debussy (1862-1918):  Nino Gvetadze (piano)

Arabesque No. 1 & 2 | Preludes Book I | Estampes | Clair de lune

Watching the plump snowflakes meandering about and eventually falling peacefully to their final resting place while reflecting on the music of Debussy.  A perfect combination.

A much preferred scenario as opposed to previously watching the bluish TV window and listening to snowflakes make utter fools of themselves everyday.  Can't stand it anymore.

LP - Columbia 2003 reissue : )

The crows are back trying to build a twig nest in my chimney, they tried it last year without success.

I dunno if its me lighting the fire, or the music that puts 'em off.

Hey there, all you middle men
Throw away your fancy clothes
And while you're out there sittin' on a fence
So get off your ass and come down here
Cause rock 'n' roll ain't no riddle man
To me it makes good, good sense
Good sense, let's go...
