I have this one, but I haven't played it for some time. I had to buy it for  the title. It was hidden in the jazz file of a now closed shop.

I will play it today, it will sooth my difficult moods of the last weeks. Although I am not properly sad and not a woman.

Max,

Stefan Just used to have Rabin About-Khalil weekends and he would post like fifteen straight albums of the guy. I used to tell him that he was completely OUD of his mind. I miss the guy.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849):  Recital 3 - Janina Fialkowska (piano)

With an assortment of the heavy hitter works of Chopin that form a good chunk of my top favourite music such as Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat major, Op. 61, Impromptu in G-flat, Op. 51, No. 3, Scherzo No. 4 in E-major and the 4th Ballade in f-minor, Op. 52 what is not to like.  There is a lot to like here.  I think this is the grande, old school playing that can be rare these days.  Fialkowska can be fairly muscular in her playing but at the same time mostly follows the dynamic markings in the score (I say mostly but not always.)  Sometimes a forte can be played fortissimo or even more but she is always very capable of playing piano or pianissimo when directed.  This is nice as this seems to be the biggest issue with many players of a younger generation.

So there is an energy here in the playing that makes for excitement.  For me, I quite like her playing and of course have all of her output.  Overall, I think she is most successful in the smaller scale works such as the Nocturnes, Waltzes, Preludes.  I liked these very much as well as the 3rd Impromtu which is just sublime.  The Polonaise, Scherzo, and Ballade were OK but I expected a little more passion from the Ballade.

Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3

I haven't heard his 3rd with Columbia Symphony Orchestra, but I've got his Brahms Symphony 4 with NYP set from 1951.

As some of you may know, this album 'the scene changes The Amazing Bud Powell'  is primarily piano based first released on Blue Note Records in 1959. I have a 2014 Music Matters reissue however after many plays over the years and some changes to the set up I still find the recording of the piano particularly thin, almost scratchy! and ill defined within the soundstage.

I would be very interested in what the 'jazz heads' on here who own any copy of this album CD or LP think.

It's been a while since I spun this album ( Bud Powell is one of my fave piano player ) but I don't recall piano sounding thin and scratchy. However piano still sounded a bit muffled ( as usual for Van Gelder recording ).

I'll pull it out after I get my Brahms fix in.

Munch/BSO: Brahms Symphony No.4.

Munch is one of those conductor that I just can't get on with. This is no exception. flat liner all the way through. If I wasn't paying attention, I could have easily missed the finale even. :/

Decent pressing by the RCA's Living Stereo but without the performance I like this is not a keeper.

I've listened to this album several times (CD rip), but I can't quite warm to it. Not their best.

Tony, i know what you mean but it can't be easy for them to keep up with the bonzer stuff they've produced over the years.

Toy - on vinyl LP sounded absolutely wunderbar on my Sondek this afternoon in the Cymbiosis dem room though Kudos 808s, ...helped out no doubt with a freshly fitted Tranquility, and Sarum T cable : )

Debs

Hi Debs, what do you think of the Tranquility.

I have one fitted and love what it does!

Just played this (UnitiServe > Mu-so). To my ear the piano sound is not great but acceptable, not thin or scratchy. I listened to it via the Complete Blue Note box set which may make a difference?

Hi Andy,

yes; Tranq fitted yesterday - along with 3 new springs replaced with the most expert of fettling. I think the Tranquility is a fabulous invention, and should be considered an obligatory requisite for the concerned LP12 owner,  ...if it's not already!

And without a silly burn-in issue to mention, now enjoying Boris & Malia in top form : )
