Sergei Rachmaninov 1873-1943):  Evgenia Rubinova (Piano)

6 Moments musicaux op. 16:
Moment musical No. 1 in B flat minor - Andantino
Moment musical No. 2 in E flat minor - Andantino
Moment musical No. 3 in B minor - Andantino
Moment musical No. 4 in E minor - Andantino
Moment musical No. 5 in D flat major - Andantino
Moment musical No. 6 in C major - Andantino
Piano Sonata no 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36
Fritz Kreisler (arrangements by Sergei Rachmaninov):
Liebesleid | Liebesfreud

A special day calls for special music.  When I want to listen the the Moment musicaux I always turn to Evgenia Rubinova.  The e-minor used to be my go to favourite (still is) but as of hearing this recording many years ago I think the greatest of the set is the b-flat minor followed by the e-flat minor.  I hate pitting one against another - they are all wonderful.

Regarding the b-flat minor though I have yet to hear anyone come close to her understanding of this work.  What makes it special is her ability to let the music speak and for this she has a knack of just letting space work its wonders.  The opening may be unconventional to some but it is filled with wisdom in my opinion and the contrast between the opening which is rather questioning and a little sad next to a flurry of emotions spewing out for the ending.

DubXanne - Police In Dub.

Completely bonkers album, which takes the "reggae lite" sound of The Police to a whole different level ......... a real hoot!

On Tidal ........... go on, have a listen.

Read that this should be one of a 1001 albums you must hear and wow what a great record, I can't wait to hear it via speakers tomorrow when family out!

This is next on my playlist tonight.......  There are some great records on the list of 1001 albums by Robert Dimery. I have ordered the book for my wife's birthday! The list can also be found on discogs.

Diana Krall - The Girl in the Other Room

The wonderful Ms Krall at her coolest, ably assisted on this album by her co-songwriter and husband, Elvis Costello.

My favourite DK album.

Claude Achille Debussy (1862-1918):  Nelson Goerner (piano)

Estampes | Etudes Book II | Images Book I | L'Isle Joyeuse

Amazing actually that I find music to play without a streamer.  Hmmm, let's see, I go to the Debussy corner and look for something and in the process see and touch other albums which is a nice experience in itself going down memory lane.  Has worked since pre-historic times but if more people today say it isn't cool then it mustn't be cool anymore?  Actually, I have never really given a rat's derrière of what the hoi polloi think and do.

Actually, I jest a little but not completely.  I do see, as everyone else today experiences, the advantage of a fully digital library of music.  Besides speed of searching I can acknowledge to myself the convenience to be had to be able to play one piece of music (complete, a movement, or a fragment) and compare it quickly to 50 other examples by different artists.  I would love this ability to analyze different interpretations.  Maybe one day but for now I can live with doing this same thing manually.

The Debussy itself here is more than wonderful.  Hoping for followup albums from Goerner.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750):  Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244

ChristianeOelze- soprano•Ingeborg Danz-alto•Michael Schade-tenore (Evangelista/Arias)•Matthias Goerne- basso (Jesus) • Thomas Quasthoff - basso (Arias) • Ursula Fiedler, soprano (Ancilla I) • Barbara Osterloh - soprano (Ancilla II) • Bettina Arias - soprano (Uxor Pilati) • Daniela Sindram - alto (Testis I) • Martin Wanner - tenore (Testis II) • Christoph Wagner - basso (Judas) • Peter Pöppel - basso (Petrus) • Ralf Ernst - basso (Pilatus) • Jörn Sakuth - basso (Pontifex I) • Stefan Müller-Ruppert - basso (Pontifex II)

Helmuth Rilling | Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart • Bach-Collegium Stuttgart

A fantastic Matthäus-Passion.  Modern leanings but still retaining some elements of a more in the traditional German rendering.  The evolution though is from Klemperer we get a slightly quicker overall tempo with Münchinger & Richter and now Rilling is roughly midway between Münchinger & Richter and the pack of Gardiner's and the like.  The cast here is brilliant.  Perhaps a tad too quick for me at times but really an overall winner with me.  Very satisfying.
