Another one from Art Pepper.

From Amazon:

After prison, after first shocking, then disappointing, and perhaps ultimately (and grimly) amusing the jazz world with enough dope-related hijinks to fill a book (as in Straight Life), alto saxist Art Pepper made a triumphant mid-1970s comeback. This 1979 session is rich with the fruits of Pepper's return, a depth of playing that shows itself constantly throughout the New York Album's five tunes. Pepper, as his widow, Laurie, notes in the liners, was always best when out to prove himself. Here, he's out to show pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Al Foster that he's still a force to reckon with. "A Night in Tunisia" is fascinating, if a trifle straightly read, as is "Straight, No Chaser." The best bits here, though, are Pepper's yearning solo rendition of "Lover Man," the piano-bass duo on "Duo Blues," and the blazing, off-time take on "My Friend John," one of the leader's funkiest charts ever.

Seeing the Art Pepper albums above has inspired me to play this one, so thanks! The Vanguard albums are really superb. A glass of Marsanne Viognier here at home is certainly cheaper than a drink at the Vanguard...

During a coffee break. I have been working in the yard all day long instead of spending a second day at AXPONA:

Anyway, a highly recommended solo piano:

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757):  Olivier Cavé (piano)

Naples, 1685 - Various Keyboard Sonatas

Cavé has selected 17 of the 555 sonatas written by Scarlatti and for a change most of the disc stays away from the small set of super popular sonatas found on every Scarlatti disc.  This is perfect for me.

I had nearly forgotten what a perfect disc this is.  Besides the selection of not so often heard material, the playing is fantastic, the piano / recorded sound is very nearly perfect and ideal for me.  I think this is what a nice piano sounds like.  If only everyone (including me) could play and sound like this.  This is an exceptional recording all around.  Actually, I have all of Cavé's recordings and they are all "super-mighty" in the words of a ridiculous small man dictator.
