What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Captain Bombastic's new one. Love the record, but this CD sounds a bit brickwalled/overly compressed/mushy (or whatever the term is), especially compared to the likes of Amused to Death. Hopefully the vinyl will sound better.
Death Cab For Cutie - "Kintsugi" (2015)
I told myself that I was playing this to check out my record player, then I thought actually I was playing it as a kind of tribute in memory of Gregg Allman, but whatever the reason, it is one heck of a good rock album. Jelly Jelly.
A 2015 two-CD compilation of hits, deep album cuts and waifs and strays. Arrived today. Decent sleeve notes by Alan Cackett and OK mastering/SQ.
When listening to Bobbie Gentry, I'm always rather moved - by her unbelievable talent, her songwriting and storytelling gifts, her stunning voice, the fact that she was yars ahead of her time and in complete control, despite getting very little credit from a male-dominated industry. She's no big-haired country glamourpuss or one-hit wonder, she's a true artist, like Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Yoko Ono or Annette Peacock.
For me, she's the most complete female pop star/performer/artist of them all.
Heartbreaking version of Catch The Wind
The Weepies - "Sirens" (2015)
Now doing my best to kill my ears with this. Great pressing on 180g vinyl. I hope the neighbours like it too!
London Symphony Orchestra - Best of LSO Live

The rain's here, and I have one ear out for any thunder. Meanwhile some sublime Quincy Jones on vinyl from 1981.
If you've never heard this, IMV it's most definitely one to be explored. James Ingram and Patti Austin feature, with credits to Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, and many more. Michael Jackson appears on backing vocals.
Classic lyric:
I graduated from the college of the street - I got a PH.D in how to make ends meet.
Sting - "57th & 9th" (2016)
On CD:-
A masterpiece, and the album she was most fond of (it flopped and its reception probably prompted her exit from the recording business). As the title suggests, it is a tapestry of American popular culture - blues, folk, country, vaudeville, musical theatre, soul... Bobbie wrote every note, produced it, arranged most of it and even painted the cover picture. UK first vinyl from 1971:

Tas Cru - Biscuit.
New York bluesman who plays down home country blues ........... not too well known, but awfully good, IMHO.
This particular album doesn't seem to be on Tidal, though a quick search will reveal most of his other ones ................... have a listen.
Just finished listening to 'Jolly Rogers' new album on vinyl and it's just what you would expect from RW. It has a little bit of a Amused to Death / Animals feel to some of the tracks. "As Waters recently told Rolling Stone: “I’ve only ever written about one thing in my life, which is the fact that we as human beings have a responsibility to one another.” Well, there you are this is a brilliant album up there with Blackstar imo and it sounds great on vinyl.
Early stand out tracks...Picture That”, “Broken Bones”, and “The Life We Really Want”
Haven't round to hearing the vinyl yet G, but the CD a bit disappointing, it sounds a but mushy. Looking forward to hearing it on the black stuff. Agree that the title track is a standout.
As expected, but at the same time I like it a lot...
Sounds good I will get it...
