Russell Malone - Sweet Georgie Peach

From allmusic.com

During part of the 1990s, Russell Malone put his solo career on the back burner as he toured the world as an important part of Diana Krall's trio. Since he was scheduled to break away from Krall at the end of 1998, the release of this solo album was a timely event. With a couple of exceptions, the emphasis here is on slower tempos and relaxed moods. There are no swing standards included other than "Someone's Rocking My Dreamboat," and only "Sweet Georgia Peach" (which is a bit funky) and Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi" (based on the chords of "Sweet Georgia Brown") are taken at faster speeds. The latter, a Malone duet with pianist Kenny Barron, is easily this CD's high point. Of the repertoire, the guitarist contributed five of the ten numbers and is also heard exploring Thad Jones' "Mean What You Say," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and a couple of obscurities. Malone and Barronare joined by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Lewis Nash throughout the melodic, often melancholy, and generally wistful outing. Although it would have been better if there were more tempo variations and some heated selections, this is a tasteful effort, and Russell Malone does have a beautiful tone on his guitar.

Sam Bush - Ice Caps: Peaks of Telluride

Not very original of me as it was someone else who first posted this - apologies but I can't remember who it was. Anyway, I feel compelled to 'repost' this one because I think it is superb. Bluegrass is surely at it's heart with a bit of old school country/blues and soft rock thrown in free of charge. The musicianship is impeccable. If that sounds of interest, I would urge you to have a listen.

This is a new to me and it's very good indeed so it's getting a second spin (back to back).

"When you first hear Morphine's music the combination of Mark Sandman's soulful, baritone voice and Dana Colley's drawling, baritone saxophone is immediately striking. Quickly you'll notice a third element; something is unusual about the guitar sound. Sandman built his own two stringed electric bass guitars which he played with a slide. I can't think of another band which used such a sound as an integral part of their music and it gives Morphine a uniquely laconic atmosphere as the bass notes, usually the bedrock in even the most wild music, naturally drift ever so slightly from the correct pitch. It all adds up to a cool after-hours vibe."------- An Amazonian

Jerry Garcia Band - Kean College, February 28th 1980 - Live.

Just giving this a listen before the expected storm comes to clear the air just east of Nottingham. A great day as Notts. beat Leicestershire by a lot inside two and a half days - brilliant to be there to see the win and Samit Patel get clapped off for his magnificent match winning 247.

"UNPLUGGED 1994 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SECOND NIGHT Following years of public speculation, the Eagles formally reunited in 1994, 14 years after splitting up in 1980. The line-up comprised the five Long Run-era members - Glen Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Timothy B. Schmit - supplemented by Scott Crago (drums), John Corey (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Timothy Drury (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), and Al Garth (sax, violin) on stage. For the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation , announced Frey at their first live performance in April 94. The ensuing tour spawned the live album, Hell Freezes Over (named for Henley's recurring statement that the group would get back together when hell freezes over ), which debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. It included four new studio songs, with Get Over It and Love Will Keep Us Alive both becoming Top 40 hits. The album - for which the live tracks were recorded at an MTV Special on 24th April 94 - proved as successful as the tour, selling six million copies in the U.S. The following night - 25th April 1994 - the Eagles returned to Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, CA, where they had recorded the previous night, and a second show was filmed and indeed transmitted on television. This little known event however has not previously been released and rarely ever heard since. For the first time, this CD now features this relaxed and quite extraordinary event in its entirety." - The Blurb

I love this Barenboim set recorded in the GDR Funkhaus in 1990.  Style is in the tradition of Furtwangler, Bruno Walter, Celibidache, and Klemperer. Not a hint of Gardiner, Hogwood, Norrington or even Abbado. I also love the HIP school but I’m glad Maestro Barenboim’s vision is part of my collection. Oh, and the Berlin Staatskapelle is not too shabby!

Beethoven: The Symphonies

Tonight its a mix of everything below along with fairly large helpings of one of my favourite vin rouge - Lirac:

Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía - Friday Night Live

David A Stewart & Candy Dulfer - Lily was here

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Les McCann - The Truth

Vivaldis Four Seasons - Nigel Kennedy

Basement Jax - Do your thing

And finally Ben Webster - Jazz around Midnight

Why? The 21st juin is 'La Fete de la musique' in France, previous years weve seen Chic play at St Emillion Jazz Festival & numerous other concerts, many musicians playing live in the streets everywhere - La Rochelle being not too far away has several events & theres concerts going on all week.

Sibelius Symphony #2. Chandos, RSNO, Mackerras.  One of my favourite Symphonies. A long time since I played this recording, but very enjoyable. Fast tempos - it's a full 5minutes (= 12% !) Shorter than the Gramophone recommended Decca, Ashkenazy version, but it works just as well at this speed and simply highlights different aspects of Sibelius' fabulous Symphony.

This version really brings out the similarities between the sweeping final movement and John Williams music for the final sequence of Close Encounters. Sibelius must have copied him I guess..

I just want to say what a wonderful source this place is for music and artists. I have discovered so many artists new to me who are now firm favourites. I do my best to reciprocate but occasionally am only able to repost the stuff I have discovered.

Thanks to all who post on here.

Loving Notts doing so well albeit in Division 2, and love that Samit is doing so well in his benefit season. He is such a star. I am a season ticket holder but sadly somewhat constrained by work. Looking forward to Lords a week on Saturday though. On the music front I need to find time to invest in The Dead and Garcia...think it should be down my street but never got into it.
