I've just done a back-to-back session of London Grammar, starting out with the first album then followed by the new one. Some people have stated that it's not as good as the first, but give it time. It's not as immediately accessible, but I think it shows a degree more refinement. There's still plenty of space to allow Hannah Reid's voice to soar and great production too. A lovely album indeed.

The pressure is on me now! Give it time before you draw your own conclusions. And then please tell us what you think.
The Stranglers - 10
Not the obvious.
With records sounding this good, how the ... did CD catch on btw!
People forget there were a lot of awful quality vinyl pressings released back in their heyday. People then jumped to cd around the hype, the quality has eventually caught up, for some people?
The xx - I See You
Oh I say.
Tonight turned into a Canadian chanteuse fest chez moi..
starting with Holly Cole's album, Shade - inspired to dig this out by the lyrics to Heatwave popping into my head for only slightly subliminal reasons (!)
Which led on to her earlier album; Dark, Dear Heart
..and after listening to her superb version on Join Mitchell's River ( not many people could pull off a cover of such a song) it naturally led mt to want to contrast with Joni's original
..and following that up with 'A case of you' inspired me to K.D. Lang's version of that song, plus a few more from this album
All very lovely
CD 3.
During workout, more blues than jazz....
Today on R4, where I thought Justin Webb's reporting from Brussels was excellent. So I wrote and told them.
Now Esbjörn Svensson Trio - EST Plays Monk , in a cool bath.
Il Trovatore: Cellini/Shaw
Baritone [Graf Von Luna] – Leonard Warren
Bass [Ferrando] – Nicola Moscona
Mezzo-soprano [Azucena] – Fedora Barbieri
Mezzo-soprano [Ines] – Margaret Roggero
Soprano [Leonora] – Zinka Milanov
Tenor [A Messenger] – Nathaniel Sprinzena
Tenor [Manrico] – Jussi Bjoerling
Tenor [Ruiz] – Paul Franke
This is a wonderful sounding '52 mono recording. Utterly natural and stress free. Expressive and down to earth performance. I love Warren’s voice which is rounded and warm melting butter slightly reminiscent of Caruso. Milanov's friendly tone also to my liking. Very listenable easy to follow set.
Vivaldi - Four seasons
Wolfret Brederode - Black ice.
Typical ECM Jazz. Very nice.
