2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Another bargain Rip. 1st time I've heard this album, Krauss sings beautifully as I'd expect, less bluegrassy than other albums, but great playing from the Union Staion band members and lovely in every way.

Looks interesting Erich, how are you finding it?
Yet another of the bargain CDs bought today ripped, I've ripped 44 discs today (42 bought, 2 were doubles). The 50th birthday concert for the great English fiddler Dave Swarbrick, back in 1991. First half is fine traditional folk playing with Swarb playing with his early influences, then Carthy and Fairport play with him to move toward folk-rock. Great musicianship on all numbers, I enjoyed all of,it, more detail below.
It starts with Swarb playing with his original mentors first Beryl Marriott and then Ian Campbell, then his great collaborator as he became a well known name Martin Carthy, then the 1991 incarnation of the group he was in when they created English folk-rock, Fairport convention. As that implies we start with quite traditional folks but it's not stereotypical finger in the ear, it's lovely. When Carthy joins him, the sound becomes more modern, like the young Turks of the folk scene they were 50'years ago, with 1990s political updating of one number which is still relevant today. Then the 1991 Fairport Jon him, and we get a folk rock band swinging away.
I came to English folk through folk rock, Fairport and Steeleye, I think had it just been the traditional school I'd have not bothered, the traditional vocal numbers still challenge me. The rock side brought me in and let me see the beauty in the underling form, the over-traditional vocals would have kept me away from the amazing instrumentals.
Sadly Swarb died just over a year ago, he was a giant if his field for half a century, I gave many happy memories if gigs from small pub back rooms to 20,000 audience festivals, he's missed by many.

Sound quality is not what I expected. But its interesting to have all this works in a set. I have to hear them all to give an opinion of the whole set. I was familiar only with the symphony "From the New World" (#9) and went to a concert that included #8 and was motivated to explore all the symphonies.

8CD box (GPT, The complete Wind Concertos). I was waiting for it for a long time and today when I went to the store it had finally arrived. I like this concertos very much. I recommend them to all who like baroque music.
