What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;

I'd say the tempo seemed a little hurried compared with what I'm used to, but I still find it an immensely moving piece, particularly in the last movement.
What is your favorite recording of Tchaikovsky's 6th?
Police and Thieves, Book of Rules, Stepping Razor, Fade Away, Slave Master etc…every one a winner.

Thanks to whoever it was who posted this originally. I like it.
Blue Car, on this cd, is a great song.
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West
Crowdpleaser, so vivid on vinyl.

Probably Gergiev's. This was quickly passed by when the work was reviewed recently on BBC Radio 3 Record Review, but I like the passion, energy and gravitas that Gergiev gives to the piece. What about your favourite?
Now playing this superb live recording and enjoying the bonus studio track with Rick Wakeman.

There are 2 different editions of the album. Greg changed a couple of songs on it after it was originally released.

It is indeed - I love his description of the clutch on that Blue Car - just delightful. Put a smile on my face!
CB, although not a great singer, has a wonderful tone and texture to his voice and the lyrics are great. I guess you might describe his music as Country with a Bluesy edge to it. Rather Johnny Cashesqe in parts but very unique.
Tower Records Japan exclusive issues a series of SACD's remastered from the original analogue masters.
Have hardly stopped playing this since I got it.
Some relaxing Tangs before calling it a night.
Stan Gets Quartet: Live in Paris
Someone was sitting on the tapes for 14 years. Recorded in France in 1982 and released only in 1996 on the Dreyfus label.

Great stuff Haim...enjoyed those 2 links and may have to try and snag a copy of this.
Now Playing......
Barney Wilen - Essential Best
After an evening of listing to classical organ, five-string cello, an fortepiano I thought a little saxophone, organ and drums would be nice.

Any comment on the sound, compared to older releases?

I need to compare it with the 4 other versions I have playing through an OPPO which is not my normal way of playing cd's. (1st pressing Japan, 1st WG mastering, Gold disc and a SHM version).
I believe the cd layer is just a mastering of the standard Japanese cd but must admit that I am finding nuances in the music that I feel I have never heard before whilst playing the SACD layer.
I wasn't quite sure of the sound initially as I didn't feel there was much bottom end even so I can't stop playing it but I would rather compare it against some of the other copies of the set I have before making a judgement.
This is my most played album of all time and my fav disc.
Last night, soon before going to sleep, while my wife was sleeping already in the couch after a 12 hours travel back home including car, a ferry, three trains... And I wanted to try a new box I added to the system. Beautiful music.

I don't know yet. I've listened many times to Karajan / Berliner for a year now. Kirill Petrenko - the next conductor in chief for the Berliner conducted it as well recently, and I liked it. It's there on the Digital Concert Hall. I don't like Mrawinsky's performance. Too flat. I'm thinking of posting a Tchaikovsky topic on this forum in the future.
I remember giving this album its first play on my brand new LP12 (Valhalla, LVX, Basik cart). Unfortunately my Cyrus 1 decided it was a good time to pop a couple of output transistors and so that ended the session early. My LP12 fronted an old Hitachi micro system for the next few weeks whilst my Cyrus amp went back to Mission for repairs. Happy days
Still a great album.
Sting - Nothing Like The Sun
Billy Bragg - "Tooth & Nail" (2013)
I'm not a big fan of the vocal on this album, but that doesn't mean there are some pleasant tunes. Not one of his best though IMHO. Playing original ECM vinyl copy.
Bob Dylan - "Bringing It All Back Home" (1965)
Steven Wilson - "The Raven That Refused To Sing" (2013)

On my new little Uniti Atom, a replacement for the second system and sounding really rather special straight out of the box, a wee gem.
