Shostakovitch Symphony No. 5 - Czech Philharmonic Karel Ancerl

I first heard this symphony live at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh played by the SNO conducted by Alexander Gibson. In my student days the tickets were 50p for up in the gods, but the view down on the orchestra was good and the sound also. A small group of us went most weeks.

Anyone else got experience of the Usher Hall winter season concerts on Friday evening?

Shostakovitch has pointed out that the greatness of Beethoven's music lies in impassioned treatment of the problems of humanity. To an artist who is sincerely committed to the socialist cause that society must be the subject matter. The fifth certainly went down well representing the struggle of a people towards a better society.

I bought this recording soon after and have always been moved by it. I am demoing the SL RCA to DIN that Naim kindly lent to my dealer and am very impressed by the sound improvement even after only two weeks.

I have always enjoyed the Chemical Brothers ever since  those days of listening to Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole on my portable MP3 player and first gen streaming solution in the late 90s (when MP3 was cool and sub culture and everyone had their optimum settings for their favourite encoder). Particularly enjoying this album as sounds new and interesting and brings break beat electronica forward

First CD in this four-disc box set I purchased earlier in the week. As well as better-known names such as Yello, DAF, Cluster and Borghesia this survey of early Euro electronica contains the intriguing likes of Gagarin-Kombinaatii, Truus de Groot, Famlende Forsøk and Saal 2...

Cheers Kevin, this box set looks interesting.

Only listened to the first CD Steve so far but it's really good. Worth getting as most of the stuff is pretty obscure. There's also a companion volume, Close to the Noise Floor, concentrating on UK electronica of the same perios, which I'm now seriously thinking of getting...

Absolutely getting this.. thanks for the heads up, salavating already....

"One certainty though is that this music does not play itself; it requires committed interpretation. Krystian Zimerman and his colleagues give it everything and the results are magnificent. Zimerman gives a reading of the sonata that is as passionate as it is precise. He is a player who knows all about making the most of the moment, so when Bacewicz calls for a phrase to appear out of nowhere and take the audience by surprise, Zimerman gives the effect all the immediacy and physical power it needs. He doesn't hog the limelight in the quintets, which benefit from excellent balance between the instruments."

A short piece from 1952 of Grazyna Bacewicz playing the violin:

Doug, thanks again.

live on Christmas 2000 in NYC.  BWV 91, 110, 40, 121.  Perhaps an odd choice in July.  ;-)

Emily Remier and Larry Coryell - Together

This collaboration between two jazz guitar players worked out very well.

Offa Rex - Queen of Hearts.

This is absolutely georgous - I've been playing it daily since I came across it a couple of weeks ago.  A modern twist on trad folk songs (I'm not a folk buff at all), singer has a lovely voice and the "backing band" (The Decemberists !) are really song.

If you have Tidal jump in at track 3 "The Gardener "and give it a whirl....

2017 - Tidal...

Desperate Journalist - Grow Up. Follow up to their self titled debut album. Very rough around the edges (terrible SQ)pop/punk/goth with hints of War on Drugs. The only good song for me  is the opening track - Hollow, and the band is getting some air play on R6. Not interesting enough for me and I'm probably getting too old for this kind of shit. What do I know anyway?

*Edit - I was too late to edit my comment and should say that yes it is minimalist but does starts to get rather funky as it unravels, very enjoyable downloaded from bandcamp. Another great recommendation from Gary Shaw a couple of years ago.
