2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

1993's Rigoletto from New York in the last notable studio recording of this opera to appear to date. Pavarotti, still excellent and sounding better here than for Chailly a few years earlier (though certainly vocally not at his peak as recorded in 1971 with Bonynge and Sutherland), is a more sympathetic duke than usual, but the real draw to this performance are Levine's conducting, Studer's Gilda (my favorite Gilda on record) and Chernov as a smallish voiced but dramatically acute Rigoletto. On CD.

Cheers

Claudio Jr De Roas Jazz 4et - Groovin' Up.

Good modern jazz music from a (for me) new artist in the modern bop style.

  • Claudio Jr De Rosa - sax
  • Xavi Torres - piano
  • Kimon Karoutzos  - bass
  • Augustas Baronas - drums

Among Rostropovitch' many recordings of the Dvorak, his collaboration with Giulini brought the warmest, most lyrical performance. It is a more heartfelt performance than his more famous one with Karajan. Sound wise, this issue is nothing special. EMI/Warner's latest transfer, also in high-res, is a bit more natural than the GROC issue but still suffers from somewhat indistinct midrange and fizzy top.

Cheers

Both performances, Marion Verbruggen on recorder and Mary Springfels on the viola da gamba are outstanding. Unfortunately, the disc is out of print. This is Verbruggen from another recording of Handel's sonatas:

Milos Karadaglic - The Beatles album.

I like the Beatles and I like classical guitar music. So I thought this could be a great album. And it is. Milos plays the songs beautiful with nice arrangement. Most of the songs are solo guitar. On a few Milos is accompanied by a small chamber orchestra and vocalist like Gregory Porter and Tori Amos.

Kandace Springs - Soul Eyes

Why? Oh my, I can't praise this lady and this album enough. I think it was Tony who took a punt on a vinyl copy of this album when he visited his local HiFi shop and he stuck it on here. I can't believe KS is not more mainstream. She is so talented in a lovely understated kind of way. So cool.

This is up there with Sean Rowe as my find of the year. I hope Kandace will bring out another album soon as I am starting to wear this one out, if indeed it is possible to wear out a CD rip. This is on Tidal if you want to give it a whirl.

This has become a bit of a go to album for me of late. It is just great hard bop with the ability to refresh the parts other tracks can't reach. I have this as part of the 'Complete Recordings' set. Brilliant stuff.

Ewe, not sure if you saw my Kandace Springs post and thought I might like this as there are similarities in style, or just coincidence. Anyway, this Liz Wright album is fairly new so does not appear on Tidal yet. There are however a couple of tracks from the album on Tidal, 'Barley' and the wonderful 'Seems I'm Never Tired Lovin' You'. Lovely stuff and I bet the album is a belter. May need to take a trip up the big river!
