Ewe, not sure if you saw my Kandace Springs post and thought I might like this as there are similarities in style, or just coincidence. Anyway, this Liz Wright album is fairly new so does not appear on Tidal yet. There are however a couple of tracks from the album on Tidal, 'Barley' and the wonderful 'Seems I'm Never Tired Lovin' You'. Lovely stuff and I bet the album is a belter. May need to take a trip up the big river!

Very strange, Nigel. I can see all her albums. Make sure you type her name with double "Z". And you're right, she's also rather good. Try " The Orchard".

Yikes! That has got to go on my wish list!

EDIT Just had a look on Amazon and see that there's also a Lifetime album being released with Allan Holdsworth.

Kandace Springs - Soul Eyes

Why? Oh my, I can't praise this lady and this album enough. I think it was Tony who took a punt on a vinyl copy of this album when he visited his local HiFi shop and he stuck it on here. I can't believe KS is not more mainstream. She is so talented in a lovely understated kind of way. So cool.

This is up there with Sean Rowe as my find of the year. I hope Kandace will bring out another album soon as I am starting to wear this one out, if indeed it is possible to wear out a CD rip. This is on Tidal if you want to give it a whirl.

Just listened on Tidal superb, cd ordered from across the pond thanks for the tip.

Lizz Wright - The Orchard

A few mentions of Lizz Wright by ewemon, nigelb, and tony2011 above peaked my interest in Lizz. As Nigel mentioned I searched on her name with correct spelling and can not see the Album Grace, just a couple of single tracks. Thanks for the mention and recommendation.

I was inspired to play this following Tony2011's post above and the prospect of another two Lifetime albums.

Apologies to Nigel. Grace comes out on the 15 sept, hence just a couple of tracks on Tidal...

Tony, I have looked again on Tidal and I can see several Lizz Wright albums but not Grace. In fact I am listening to  Freedom and Surrender right now and rather lovely it is too, even better with a guest appearance by Gregory Porter. I will be sure to Tidalise 'The Orchard' for a listen later.

You beat me to it Tony. Looks like we will have to wait to hear 'Grace'. If the two tracks on Tidal are anything to go by, it should be a belter.

My bad, Kev. Just apologised to Nigel.

Not out till Sept 15th.

Nigel I had a copy of the Kandace album a few weeks before it was released and gave it a quick listen then but it never stuck but possibly because I need to be in the mood to listen to a particular genre of music befoore O play it. However am playing it now and have to admit it is a good album.

I have also heard her EP that was released with more of a Hip Hop feel to it before the above album came out. Apparently she didn't like the route Blue Note were pushing her down and gotr them to get her to move to a more jazzier style.

@seakayaker, if you like Lizz Wright, I would suggest you also have a listen to Kandace Springs and her Soul Eyes album.

It is on Tidal and I would be interested in your thoughts.

Gary Shaw on another thread a few days ago, reminded me of this, audio ripped from blu-ray DVD in hi-res on the 50th anniversary of this album and it sounds absolutely wonderful. * Edit I should add for those that might not know this version includes Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane just the way it should have been way back when

No problem Tony, easy mistake to make. I asked Kevin to bring back his Sid avatar as it made me smile so I thought I had better reciprocate with a Sid avatar of my own. I think Sid avatars will become all the rage in time.

Borodin's a composer I mainly know through live music, I've heard and enjoyed the symphonies, string quartets and Prince Igor over the years at concerts. I have Symphony No. 2 on a Concertgebouw recording, but I think that's it. This was one of the 30p purchases from a couple of weeks ago, a real result. Borodin writes great melodies, and the orchestration is complex and sophisticated, this is very high class Romantic music with an Eastern/Russian flair.  Well played by the Seattle Orchestra, a very good disc. I'll look out for the string quartets as well, a composer I'd like to listen to more frequently. (I'll look out for the rest of the mighty handful as well, I've always enjoyed their music at concerts.)

Among Rostropovitch' many recordings of the Dvorak, his collaboration with Giulini brought the warmest, most lyrical performance. It is a more heartfelt performance than his more famous one with Karajan. Sound wise, this issue is nothing special. EMI/Warner's latest transfer, also in high-res, is a bit more natural than the GROC issue but still suffers from somewhat indistinct midrange and fizzy top.

Cheers

EJ

Thanks, I'll look out for that, I have the Ozawa and the Karajan recordings with Rostropovich, but that looks very interesting to add. The picture amuses me, it rather looks like a still from a vampire movie with Slava as the eccentric professor confronting Giulini's Count Dracula.

Beginning in 2012, pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland formed a duo partnership that found them performing live all around the world. The duo's 2014 studio album, The Art of Conversation, showcases this collaboration with a simple, beautifully understated mix of standards and original compositions. Journeyman solo artists and bandleaders in their own right, both Barron and Holland are virtuoso musicians who've made their mark playing disparate, if compatible, styles of jazz. On one hand, Barron, with his impeccable technique and lyrical taste, is an influential master of straight-ahead post-bop jazz. On the other hand, Holland, also blessed with imposing technique, has moved with deft ease between avant-garde jazz, athletic post-bop, and straight-ahead sessions. What they share is a thoughtful, measured precision and attention to detail, as well as empathetic musical ears that allow for deep musical interplay. All of which is on display here. There's a palpable sense on The Art of Conversation that both Barron and Holland have a deep respect for songs and the composer's original intent. However, that doesn't mean they don't take such songs as Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" and Billy Strayhorn's "Daydream" and make them their own. This balance between respecting the composer and allowing for individual interpretation is especially highlighted on a handful of their own original compositions, including Barron's languid and elegiac "Rain," on which Holland takes the melody, and Holland's similarly dreamlike ballad "In Your Arms," on which Barron takes the helm. Ultimately, it's this kind of sympathetic collaboration, mutual respect, and creative synergy that makes The Art of Conversation such a joy to listen to.(AllMusic)
