2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
On CD:-
From the Spanish label Glossa:
Mitzi Meyerson is outstanding, highly recommended.
James Cargill's Mixtape on R3's Late Junction, heading up to the midnight news on Four. Strange and compelling. (James Cargill's Mixtape that is).
Now Playing......
Joe Lovano, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden with Bill Frisell - Standards plus One
Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone), Paul Motian (drums), Charlie Haden (acoustic bass) with Bill Frisell (electric guitar) and Lee Konitz (soprano and alto saxophone; track 2 and 6)
It just get any better than this..... Love this album.....
On Vinyl. Haven't heard it for years...
Emma Kirkby and London Baroque - Handel
A good start of the morning..
Richter/Maazel: Bach Piano Concerto No.5 & Beethoven PC1
Confident and bold attitude from the top. This is not a floaty delicate Bach. A bit heavy handed like Russian army. The slow movement feels like troops dancing. His Beethoven's piano concerto is equally economical. It suffers from lack of passion and the orchestra just goes along with it.
It's like doused in a bucket of ice cold water.
Save
Perahia/Bach Piano Concertos: 2000 rec.
Overall, rounder and warm enveloping approach. His Presto is the fastest so far at blazing 3 min!. But not as expressive and carefree as Gould.
Very nice contemplative approach, tho.
George Szell & The Cleveland Orchestra - Grieg & Bizet
Dexys Midnight Runners: Young soul Rebels. CD Rip. Not heard this in ages, and just needed / fancied something from the 80's to enliven a grey Friday 13th morning with a work deadline looming.
Undervalued by me, but requires a new assessment .....
The Police: Ghost in the Machine. Still in the 80's! That bass line on "Spirits" is just superb. An interesting album - at the stage where they were on the brink of imploding as a band. Not their best, but has its high points.
Judee Sill - female vocal, with folky undertones. Very good and only just found her from a review in HiFi+.
Explored her in the last hours. The trio outings are nice for lovers of Tord Gustavsen, Peter Erskine, Collin Vallon....
Now sampling her new one, looks to be more poppy.....
Happy Listener posted:Judee Sill - female vocal, with folky undertones. Very good and only just found her from a review in HiFi+.
I only have the "Abracadabra - The Asylum Years" 2 CD compilation. Those of us who are getting on a bit may remember her appearance on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test in the 70's!
There's a good tribute song on the "case-lang-veirs" trio album, which is pretty good in itself.
Moved on to CD for some rock-ier female vocal - only cost ~£2 from MusicMagpie - a very efficient way to buy CDs. Very enjoyable.
Coleman Hawkings with the Red Garland trio - Swingville.
Sampled, nice on buying list...
Vogt Tetzlaff - good combination, bought it..
Listening to this as a reference..
B52’s: Cosmic Thing. CD rip. Still prowling the 80’s archive and found this album. Sound quality from the CD is pretty compressed and actually quite ropey, but it still grooves along. I wonder if there’s a half decent remaster available in HD download land?
I saw them live on this tour promoting Cosmic Thing and it was one of the most energetic, buzzing, energy filled concerts I’d attended to date.
