George Cables trio - My sip

My favorite CD of George Cables.

From allmusic.com:

George Cables primarily focuses on jazz compositions in this 1994 trio session with bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. His dazzling technique is heard full force in Gary Bartz's slinky, driving blues "Uncle Bubba," while his treatment of former boss Dexter Gordon's "Fried Bananas" (based on the chord changes to the standard "It Could Happen to You") is a rollicking affair as well. Pianist John Hicks'"Naima's Love Song" isn't all that well known, but Cables' sensitive Latin interpretation, with great support from McClure and Hart's light touches make it a piece worth greater exploration in the jazz world. The trio dives headlong into Freddie Hubbard's rapid-fire modal composition "The Decrepit Fox" (a hilarious name for such a demanding piece!), turning in a fiery performance. Cables' one original, "Quiet Fire," is a cooking post-bop affair as well. The pianist's lyrical side is apparent in the standard "My Ship," while the intriguing calypso introduction to "You Stepped Out of a Dream" leads into a pulsating samba treatment. Highly recommended.

Joe Henderson - Canyon Lady

Joe Henderson - Canyon Lady

Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone), Hadley Caliman  (tenor saxophone, flute), George Duke (bass, drums, percussion, piano, electric piano), Luis Gasca (bass conductor, drums, flugelhorn, percussion, piano, trumpet), John Heard (bass), John Heart (bass), Francisco Aguabella (congas), Victor Pantoja (congas), Eric Kamau Grávátt (drums), Vince Denham (flute), Ray Pizzi (flute), Mark Levine (piano), Carmelo Garcia (timbales), Nicholas Ten Broeck, (trombone), Julian Priester (trombone), Oscar Brashear (trumpet), and John Hunt (trumpet)

A little bit of Latin flavored jazz for breakfast on a Friday morning......

Streaming from Tidal

Notes from Tidal: This album has trumpeter Luis Gasca featured as a co-star with tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson. Gasca arranged "Tres Palabras" which is played by a 13-piece group (Oscar Brashear takes the trumpet solo) while the other three originals (two by pianist Mark Levine) use either a sextet or a nonet. Henderson is in fine form on these spirited Latinish performances which have also been included on his eight-CD Milestone box set. ~ Scott Yanow

2017 - Tidal...

Sadly, Percy’s solo career has always been fraught with ups and downs and I’m not impressed by his latest effort at all. Bored stiff!

This was used before to test the impact of different upgrades on the system - el ctricity / Melco, it gives your system a PRAT treatment...

2017  Tidal..

Difficult not to compare it with Vangelis’s 1982 original score but at first listen Zimmer and Wallfisch have done a great good job in keeping with the whole ethereal essence of the original soundtrack. Still, I cannot get Mary Hopkin’s haunting voice out of my head in Rachel’s Song and keep on waiting for her to pop up any minute now.

Just finishing......

Joe Henderson - Page One

Joe Henderson - Page One

Joe Henderson (saxophone), Kenny Dorham (trumpet), McCoy Tyner (piano), Butch Warren (bass), and Pete La Roca (drums)

......continued on with a little more of Joe.

Notes from Tidal:

The title Page One is fitting for this disc, as it marks the beginning of the first chapter in the long career of tenor man Joe Henderson. And what a beginning it is; no less than Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Butch Warren, and Pete La Roca join the saxophonist for a stunning set that includes "Blue Bossa" and "Recorda Me," two works that would be forever associated with Henderson. Both are bossa novas that offer a hip alternative to the easy listening Brazilian trend that would become popular with the masses. Henderson and Dorham make an ideal pair on these and other choice cuts like the blistering "Homestretch" and the engaging swinger "Jinrikisha." These both show the already mature compositional prowess that would become Henderson's trademark throughout his legendary career. The final blues number, "Out of the Night," features powerful work by the leader that only hints of things to come in subsequent chapters.

Joe Henderson - The state of the Tenor

Allmusic:

Blue Note's Doubletime series combines live sessions previously issued on two single albums onto one double CD. One of the first releases was Joe Henderson's brilliant tenor sax recital recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1985. The State of the Tenor, Vols. 1 & 2 features Henderson backed only by bass and drums in a setting that pays homage to his prime stylistic source, Sonny Rollins, while displaying his prime skills in an ideal forum. The 14 selections range from customary standards to Hendersonoriginals, and include compositions by Sam Rivers, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Horace Silver. It is not only a fine trio outing, but a series of performances in which Henderson strips songs to their essence, turning them into his own vision.

I haven't played that album in a long time. I seem to remember it has some serious oomph in the bass department.

Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Geri Allen - Etudes.

This is a very nice jazz recording!

Allmusic:

The very democratic trio of bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian and pianist Geri Allenperform sensitive yet often exploratory group improvisations on several originals, Ornette Coleman's"Lonely Woman," and Herbie Nichols' "Shuffle Montgomery." The communication between these three masterful players is quite impressive.

Thanks Tony, I'll have to try this. By the way I had totally forgotten that it was Mary Hopkins singing Rachel's Song...
