Ronald Brautigam/ Parrott/Norrikoping Symphony: Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1 & 3 - 20017 rec.

I always loved sensitive and expressive Brautigam's Schumann program so was curious to find how he does Beethoven program.

Lean and lively orchestra opens the 1st mvt. Crisp and clear piano gives the score youthful outlook. Excellent note separation and precision but the tune never becomes mechanical in anyways maintaining fluidity and polish. 1st movement cadenza reminds me of Perahia’s.  Studied under Serkin Brautigam certainly inherited  his super fast but clean accurate style from the master. What differs, tho, is his adds more of Mozartian colours and textures. Always in a good taste, not so brutal Beethoven. Altho, I could see this set could have been the way Beethonve played what lacking is a touch of sense of humour.

Orchestration here has a period instrument flavour. Prominent winds and timpani ( not sure if it's intentional or could be the usual 2ch mix down from the multi channel DSD mastering ) makes the tune somewhat amateur-ish.

Vinnitskaya/Varga/Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester: Prokofiev Piano Cto No.1 - 2010 rec.

Not played often but this concerto is the most lyrical  and lush ( for Prokofiev ) Piano is not as angry as usual Richter's spitting style. Vinnistkaya's slightly rounder and gentler creating a sense of mystery here.

Donald Fagen - Sunken Condos

Donald Fagen -Sunken Condos

I saw mention of this album from QUAD 33 previously and thought I would take it out for a spin...... a sweet album.

I have very mixed feelings about this album: when I first saw the cover and the title, such a flow of visual and conceptual suggestions told me I was in presence of a masterpiece, then neither the songs or the sound ever caught me completely. But it's DF, so I occasionally play it, with the result that I have to spend the rest of the day chasing from my mind the 'Memorabilia' brain-worm.

Since I played a couple of Donald's albums today I decided to take this on out for another spin.

I just finished playing 'Sunken Condos' and having played 'Morph the Cat' and 'The Nightfly' earlier in the day, 'Sunken Condos just sounded so much sweeter......

Possibly one of those albums that grows better & better with repeated spins.

Jon Balke & Magnetic North Orchestra - Kyanos

Jon Balke (piano, keyboards), Per Jorgensen (trumpet, vocals), Arve Henriksen (trumpet), Morten Halle (saxophone, flute), Svante Henryson (violoncello) Anders Jormin (double bass), and Audun Kleive (drums, percussion)

This was the second album delivered today and ordered after listening to his 'Siwan' album with with Amina Alaoui, Kheir Eddine M'Kachiche and Jon Hassell and other musicians which I highly recommend.

Through the first two tracks and already feel I will be finding more of Jon's albums. I have already pre-ordered his 'Siwan - Nahmou Houm' album which is scheduled for release on November 17th.

Nice cd rip, subject to the old Naim compilation problem - you mostly don't know who is playing. A look-up on the app returns 'Back to Back, Duke Ellington Plays The Blues'.

I know that many of the contributors on here seem to rate this album, but although I've had it in my collection for many years, it still does nothing for me. Thought I'd give it another try though. Maybe it's too much pop for my tastes; too 'fluffy', perhaps?

perfect for a wet rather dreary morning here at the edge of the Chilterns.
