Debussy - The Preludes (arranged for orchestra by Colin Matthews)

OK, purists look away now. Yes the original piano versions are still wonderful, but these arrangements (played by the Halle Orchestra under Sir Mark Elder) capture the mood and expression of the originals and at the same time add a certain colour and magic that makes them a very different listen.

A good follow up on my earlier listening...

Love Couperin, love Jordi Savall's work. Love this stunningly-recorded CD/SACD:

1977 - Vinyl - U.K. First pressing...

Very mellow, funky and easy on the ear with the great Wa Wa Watson  and one of the best percussionists on the planet, Paulinho Da Costa.

Tony - that looks awesome. it's now on my lust list! Thanks for the heads up.

John Lee Hooker - Don't Turn Me From Your Door.

Getting into this bluesfest, here's one of the best from John Lee, the king of trance blues.

Muddy Waters - Hard Again.

Following John Lee with this one from Muddy, with Johnny Winter in attendance.

The very best of rough and ready Chicago club blues.

Albert King - King of the Blues Guitar.

Recorded at Stax, in Memphis, the house band being Booker T & the M G's, does it get any better than this?

Such an influence on so many rock / blues guitarists who came later.

A tribute to the greatest drummer who has ever lived: Andy Votel's fantastic Can "mixtape" as played on BBC 6 Music last week, just after Jaki Liebezeit's death. Well worth a listen if you have a spare hour. Think I'm going to record it to a TDK D C60 cassette just for fun

John Nemeth - Memphis Grease.

Last blues blast for this afternoon, some modern Memphis blues in the Stax tradition .............proving that the blues are still alive and kicking.

Nickel Creek - Reasons Why (The Very Best)

Yes, I know I have posted this some time ago, but listening to it now reminds me what an absolute belter this is. Tracks so varied it defies categorisation but always underpinned by a wonderful bluegrass/folk leaning, supported by superb musicianship (particularly the mandolin), lovely songwriting and great vocals.

'Tis on Tidal if you fancy giving it a whirl.

nigelb  -  the fiddle player for Nickel Creek is Sara Watkins, and she has made several solo releases.  The newer one, from 2016, is:  "Young In All The Wrong Ways".  If you are not aware of it, try to hear it.  It will sound familiar from Nickel Creek but she has done so much work with The Decemberists and others she adds to a more wide-ranging rockier sound. A personal favorite from 2016.  regards, Jeff A

Moon Duo - Occult Architecture Vol. 1

Out today. Nothing particularly groundbreaking, just good old banging Suicide-tinged rock. Which is alright by me.

Thanks for the reminder Nick, like you I pre-ordered this months ago on Bandcamp and forgot that it was released today! Downloading now and listening later no doubt.

Gary Clark Jr. - Live.

Gary at his best .............. live ..............easily eclipses his very good studio albums. IMHO.

Playing this brilliant album again. I hesitate to call it a masterpiece, but... I think it might get a few more plays over the weekend too.

(Today)

More lovely psychedelic stuff from the Moon Duo, they haven't ventured off piste with this one so no unfortunate surprises here.
