Growing on me with every new listen. It hasn’t got the immediacy of Psyence Fiction or War Stories but it is a more involving experience altogether where the album songs are much more cohesive. Even ESKA (Naim Label) makes a guest appearance among other illustrious contributors.
There is no Rabbit In Your Headlights here but it is still a very captivating album.
Totally agree - I was looking through the posts yesterday and saw your original post about this - I didn't know they had released a new record until then, so thanks for the heads up. Bought it straight away from Qobuz and it is getting better with each listen. I am listening to it as I type this. I've got the rest of their records but haven't listened to them for ages and I am thinking a trek back through them is in order...
Enjoy it!
Now its Psyence Fiction. I must confess I don't remember this at all! I might not have played it when I bought it ages ago! It is very good though, so it's marked down as an Epiphany.
This is probably one of the richest threads here on the forum. However, if you fall behind in accessing it (I was away for 5 months this summer and couldn't access it regularly) then it becomes somewhat onerous to plod through. It would be wonderful if, when making one's post, you could designate the genre of music you were listening to along with the actual album .. that way you could cull the albums you were interested in .. thoughts ?

You have a point however, I am just taking it as it is. And I also realize myself that publishing as such is an effort so that it sometimes is a bit too much at the moment to provide a lot of background. I am sometimes just reminded or motivated by seeing the picture to try out. Or just triggered to research by the pure fact that multiple people are posting it. A long personal review with background is a bonus.
For the purpose, nice to listen for some time and relax. He normally plays jazz by the way and quite good...

I always make a point of posting the artist, album title, original year released, as well as the particular format I'm listening to and it's year of release. Beyond that, the genre can become ambiguous. The bulk of my listening would broadly fit into the 'rock' genre which would certainly delineate it from classical music, but within rock there's classical, alternative, blues, progressive, psychedelic, grunge, and possibly even folk, so it becomes difficult to assign a genre. I have no idea where to draw the line between alternative and grunge. Where would you loosely classify an artist like Beck? Popular?

I’m pretty sure that John Potter was in the Ensemble when that album was recorded. We saw them with Garbarek in Chichester Cathedral in 2011 and it was just amazing. The four singers came in from the four entrances to the cathedral and wer then joined by Garbarek. They wandered around the cathedral at various points yet kept in perfect time. Fantastic.
Oi Va Voi - Laughter Through Tears - CD (2004)
Classed as World Music, the band were based in North London and included KT Turnstall before her solo career. She still sings with them from time to time. She wrote and sang a number of the songs.
The lyrics are very beautiful as are the arrangements. It’s a very compelling listen and highly recommend ed by me , the Telegraph, Times and Sunday Telegraph. It brings older musical traditions into a 21st century setting following the experimental approach (see Wikipedia). The music is essentially timeless. You will enjoy it no matter what your taste.

If you are enjoying it so much you could explore their other album:
The Hilliard Ensemble has also an excellent recording of music by Victoria and Palestrina on ECM:

J.S. Bach: Inventions and Sinfonias - Zhu Xiao-Mei (piano)
Simply put Bach described this music best by stating the intention of these works right from the start:
Honest method, by which the amateurs of the keyboard – especially, however, those desirous of learning – are shown a clear way not only (1) to learn to play cleanly in two parts, but also, after further progress, (2) to handle three obligate parts correctly and well; and along with this not only to obtain good inventions (ideas) but to develop the same well; above all, however, to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition.
