2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

Save for reproduction quality, Graeme? I've always found Stones albums a bit lacking in that department. I heard somewhere that none of the band were too bothered with that side of things.

Maybe, then, they were too “stoned” to give a shit, Mike and the people listening to it were probably on the same wavelength.

PS. “can’t you hear me knocking” always gets in the mood and SQ is the last thing on my mind although, these days, I rather listen to the original pressing than the horrid digital and streaming equivalent.

My early cd rip sounds pretty good.  Likewise an early pressing of ‘Black & Blue’ and ‘Let it Bleed’.

‘Some Girls’ is a bit ropey, along with the well known low grade ‘Exile’....with the latter the scuzzy quality adds something inho.

Kamu/Radio Sinphony Orchestra: Sibelius Symphony 1 -'72 rec.

Certainly it started to be more of a *Sibelius* weather.

Mention was made above of adding a genre to the albums to help people search. One of the best things about this thread is that it brings to one’s attention new music from all sorts of styles and genres. It’s certainly led me to hundreds of albums I would not have investigated, and in some cases never heard of. Squeezing them into an arbitrary category may actually put people off and I see little merit in it.

I try to only post new acquisitions that I think are very good, or those I play that I think might interest others, or maybe something that’s a real blast from the past that brings fond memories. I see little benefit in posting something that everyone knows and which is being played for the umpteenth time.

I also would not suggest that certain albums fall into a category called rubbish or garbage simply because I don’t like them. Many of the records played by others do nothing for me but that doesn’t make them rubbish, just simply something that does nothing for me.

This is the fourth volume in a really wonderful series on Hyperion. The two players work so well together. I don’t recall this being mentioned on here, other than by me: I’d be interested to hear what other, more knowledgeable, members make of it.

Agree with you that Some Girls although, IMO, one of their great albums, SQ  is pretty poor. The funny bit is that a few tracks, leftovers from the original recording sessions, ended up on Tattoo You, reworked and sound superb.

Might as well...

'Bonus Material' CD from Some Girls.

There's a fair bit of borderline tosh here which didn't make the album for that reason. However... Do You Think I Really Care is sublime. The weird thing though, is that having discovered it a lot later, I wouldn't want it on the album, such is its classic status. What a collection of tracks and ordered so perfectly. Some Girls has the perfect Friday night vibe. Or Sunday morning, when a bloke's had enough of Keith Jarrett and a second coffee has been had.

Edit: +1 to an appreciation of 'scuzzy'. Luckily audiophilia has never been high on their list of priorities.

Unfortunately I do not have any copy of Some Girls (perhaps I should get one). However when I was thinking about that Heartbreaker started to play in my head

Diederik Wissels - Song of you.

Nice jazz by the Diederik Wissel band. It reminds me of Pat Metheny.

Snap, very nice, I was forced to sing along to Preacher Man, shame I now have a conference call which means I won't get to side 2 yet. The download is 16/44 WAV which is better than the MP3 I'd feared.

Not my favourite RLJ album but still good. The bittersweet 'Lucky Guy' does it for me so it's getting a listen.

Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates

Original 1998 double vinyl compilation on MCA. It was my introduction to one of THE great soul voices. Saw him many times in London between '98 and before he sadly passed away in 2012. A criminally underrated talent, and as anyone who ever met him can attest, a real gentleman.

From a 6 CD set of live Eagles performances which arrived today, pretty reasonable SQ on the 2 tracks so far. Set is called Dark Desert Highways : The Legendary Broadcasts, bargain at £12.99 for the 6 discs from the river yesterday.

PCD - if not already, I'd suggest you also get Nightbird, which is a fuller version of the LABA gig (2x CD + DVD).

The sound of the Nightbird CD Is far better to my ears. It may cost more than £1.65 though!

Brand new out today...

The reason I post is because of the label - this is Ultimae, a French electronica / downtempo label (for those that don't know of them). I think I have all Ulitimae's releases on Bandcamp and I like pretty much all of their artists. I actually buy from them without listening first! In my experience (and taste obviously) of about 10 years listening to their releases, I am pretty sure I will like anything they put out. I got an email today about this being released and it was straight off to Bandcamp to throw money at them. Upon listening, I am not disappointed.

One thing I have noticed is that their records sound great on articulate systems like the ones Naim does (although I am listening now on my mobile rig, which is Ak100 mk1 / Chord Hugo 1 / SE846).

BTW I don't work for them, and they are not paying me to say this! They are just very well matched with what I like to listen to.

(October 2017)

Giving the Barr Brothers latest album another spin on Tidal, more fine stuff from the boys and girl, another CD going into the shopping trolley.

Rachmaninov: Early Piano Works - Ekaterina Litvintseva (piano)

The depth of the unspoken...

I am certain that anyone who is passionate about or maybe even addicted to music will immediately understand the implication that music can reach "the depth of the unspoken" within us.  Maybe this is a foreign topic for you?  Ekaterina Litvintseva explains it best:

Sometimes we are afraid to grasp something that exists deep within ourselves.  Human beings are afraid of revealing their emotions, they are scared of hurting themselves and becoming defenceless.  That is how the unspoken emerges: a secret, a depth which accompanies us throughout our lives.  The most important thing about Rachmaninov's music for me is the fact that it exposes the soul.  The emotions in his oeuvre are so clear and true - there is no way of disguising oneself there.  When you play Rachmaninov you have to answer questions that you would not normally have dared to pose.  In that situation a musician needs to be brave and, in a way, "pure in heart."  Only then does the music make sense.  A depth emerges.  The depth of the unspoken.

Notice above that I said "music can reach..." something within us.  It isn't automatic or guaranteed.  Music is the conduit to our soul but if the conduit is blocked or faulty you are not getting the full value of what music can bring into your life.  Reach deeper and you will be amazed at what comes next...

(...of course, I am preaching to the choir here!  This is really meant for the vast majority of the world who do not have music or use music to enrich their lives on daily basis).

Crikey. You snapped up a bargain there, PCD.  Eva was a special talent.
