EST - Winter in Venice

Quietly, as I work and make plans. This seems an early one of theirs, less drive. Different somehow.

  Fink's Sunday Night Blues Club.

Finn Greenall's take on down home blues ............... great, atmospheric album.

It's titled "Volume 1" ................... too much to hope for that there might eventually be a "Volume 2"?

Verdi Requiem conducted by Antonio Pappano (CD quality download streamed from NAS to Nova).

I prefer high resolution downloads if I can get a first rate performance in that format and I dislike "live" recordings of classical music. (Waiting for a cough you know will be there is just like years ago waiting for a click on an LP.) However, this is a CD quality recording of a live performance. It is an absolutely mesmerising performance with gripping sound. Mercifully, there is no audible audience intervention and no applause recorded at the end. The performance and recording are simply stunning.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750):  Jean Muller (piano)

Goldberg Variations BWV 988

Jean Muller has chosen to eliminate most of the repeats with the exception of all the first half repeats in the three- and four-voice variations.  Muller sticks to a more rigid framework (in tempo) in his interpretation (ie. not at all romantic).  I very much like his choice of instrument (Steinway D-573968).

He is using floor isolators and I am very impressed with the results.  I have been researching this somewhat this year and I think it is time to replace the Fraimchips with something that is a little more designed for purpose!  I have so far found two companies that make floor isolator devices for grand pianos but don't think I can name them here?  I would like to see if this works in my home as well as figure out what else I can do to optimize the sound and get close to some of my favourite recordings.  One can say optimizing your Naim system placement and setup is either pure fantasy or fact.  With a real accoustic instrument I think the same problems do exist and hopefully can be optimized.  The debate will continue until I try these out.  Unfortunately, it is probably a matter of investing a pile of money to see if it works as I think you mostly can only order these things directly and then they are yours.  Hopefully not more snake oil.
