(1992)

Because I've not played any Soul Asylum for quite a while and this album was my favourite, hard to believe that it's a quarter of a century old this year...

  Fink - Horizontalism.

A bit of early morning Fink, not his normal style, quite dub in places ............. perfect with that wake up espresso.

I like Fink but this one less, it sound like club music to me, some tracks are good enough

Musically, I'm all over the shop this evening so out come the Scorpions for some exercise.

That’s probably my favourite of his solo albums, well at least until he released the live at Hammersmith Genesis Revisited album. I shall play Spectral Mornings later.

   Jack White - Acoustic Recordings 1998 - 2016.

Following Band of Skulls with some Jack White .................... ah ................. but it's acoustic Jack White!

Not the heavily amped Jack we're used to, but rather, a really enjoyable blues / gospel / country outing with some great guitar playing.

Duke Ellington 'Rockin in Rhythm' a CD which came with a magazine called Jazz Greats many years ago. Never mind its provenance, it still features some excellent music.

Lots of noise from the audience on this album, but maybe that's understandable given how this really cooks!

Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943):  Olga Kern (piano)

Transcriptions | Corelli Variations

Following your heart can lead to risk.  Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

If I was not obsessed with the Tchaikovsky / Rachmaninov Lullaby Op. 16, No. 1, I never would have been led to this Olga Kern recording.  It is one of a handful of works I am learning this year and so it was shocking to find that this recording seems to be rare and so therefore the vultures were all asking quite a handsome price for this.  (and NO, I couldn't wait and this was urgently needed).  All the crying about the price soon diminished once I finally heard this today.  Worth every penny, it is.

Starting with a Russian playing Russian music.  Perfect.  The character and style of the playing is simply wonderful as a result.  Again, simply perfect.  The piano and the recorded sound is really exceptional and beautiful.  Splendid, in fact.  This is all I ever ask for.  Is there anything else that one should seek?

So I make no apologies for being squarely in a Rachmaninov | Tchaikovsky phase at the moment.  As for the Lullaby (and Lilacs and Daisies) I can only repeat what the writer of the program notes says so perfectly.  "It is perhaps best to hear these works - as aquarelles, as impressionistic renderings whose sensibilities speak of colour and mood."

This is what Olga Kern exemplifies so well.  In the Lullaby, the heightened sense of colour and mood come alive under Rachmaninov's transcription.  Yes, Tchaikovsky brought us a straightforward sense of melancholy and sadness.  Rachmaninov took this though to another level injecting light through a watercolour like image and dispersing light into dancing imagery.

For me, this is a happy day for I know this is a gift to myself for a life time of continued inspiration.

John Lee Hooker - Eight Classic Albums.

Final one of the evening, this 4 CD boxset, covering 8 remastered albums, from the wonderful folks at Real Gone Music.

As usual, the remastering really does improve on the original recordings, and John Lee has never sounded better.

  Nighty night.

I play this every once in a while,  I need to be in the right mood, open minded relaxed & receptive,  volume must be cranked up then just lie back for an assault on both sonic & emotional senses.  Its a challenging listen but its one of those albums that must be listened to.  It's written in the aftermath of a long time relationship break up & much of it tells that story, it melancholy, brooding & emotionally moving but its not morose in the slightest,  absolutely brilliant.

Mike, could you help me with artist & album names?  TYVM.
