What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIII)

2017 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread can be found here;
Roxy Music - Avalon - Uniti Serve SSD
One of their best. Sounds pretty good playing through 5m optical cable into nDAC.
Phil
Playing a lot of Ella discs at the moment. Seem to be in that frame of mind.
Some of my listening today and late last night.
Now Playing.......
Charlie Haden & Chris Anderson - None But The Lonely Heart
Charlie Haden (bass) and Chris Anderson (piano)
Something light while prepping dinner......
Notes from Naim Records website: The result of three days of intensive rehearsal and recording by pianist Chris Anderson and bassist Charlie Haden, this 1997 album is a feat of improvisation and spontaneity.
all neil youngs music free downloads check it out @neil young achieves. quality excellent
Now Playing.......
Holly Cole - Temptation
Going with the mention from HAIM RONEN above and taking Holly out for a spin. First time listening to Holly and will have to check out her catalogue. Now on the 5th track and enjoying the music with Holly covering a number of Tom Waits songs with a couple of dozen other musicians backing her up on this album.
Streaming on Tidal.......
Schiff/Solti/CSO: Tchaikovsky PC1 - '85 rec.
This was recorded a few month after Pogorelich/Abbado recording. Also digital yet what a difference in sound quality. This Decca's early digital recording is stark and voicd of any warmth or colours and tones.
A young Schiff attempts to play but the balance is so heavily skewed to the orchestra. Schiff's playing too cautious and uneventful.
This is a pretty dull rendition.

While not being a huge fan of any “audiophile” recordings, and in particular much of the Naim catalogue, this one is stunningly beautiful. Fragile probably describes it best for me, as you can hear the vanishing strength in Chris’ playing, merging with Haden’s minimalistic company. Kudos to the recording also, which is far away from perfect, and in that appropriate, again.

Avishai Cohen - Cross My Palm With Silver
Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Jonathan Avishai (piano), Barak Mori (double bass), and Nasheet Waits (drums)
Continuation of the ECM Records catalogue exploration......
I played a couple of albums earlier today that feature Avishai and enjoyed the quite a bit, so 'Cross My Palm With Silver' is the nightcap!
Note from the ECM Records website here:
A year after his impressionistic, critically-lauded ECM debut Into The Silence, trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s Cross My Palm With Silver introduces a programme of new pieces which put the focus on the ensemble, on teamwork, with a quartet of the highest calibre. The adroit, almost telepathic interplay among the musicians allows Avishai Cohen to soar, making it clear why he is one of the most talked-about jazz musicians on the contemporary scene. “All of these people together are my dream team”, says the charismatic trumpeter of fellow players Yonathan Avishai, Barak Mori and Nasheet Waits, who share his sense for daring improvisation and his feeling for structure. “I feel we’re in a perfect place with the balance. It’s open and there’s so much room for the improvisation to take the music any place we can. At the same time the composition is very specific and the vibe is very direct and thought about.” As with Into The Silence, Cross My Palm With Silver was produced by Manfred Eicher at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France.
Nice raw rock...
Breakfast treat...
Warren Zevon. Mr. Bad Example. On CD from 1991. Late night listening on loop on my boombox while doing repairs to my car on my back on a cold December garage floor. My age and a couple bloody knuckles have me wondering why I don't just pay a mechanic for this pain. Anyhow, it's a good repeated listen and I'm sure Warren wouldn't mind my repeated cursing throughout the task.
Discussion on Today with a materials scientist, the topic in question, the dissatisfaction experienced by London theartre goers as a result of rustling of crisp packets.
The crisp packet is like a violin. Strings need a light stiff body to create sound. The packet is light stiff body.
Could the packet be made from something else? Yes, something softer would do it. But psychologists have shown that the rustle of the packet increases our enjoyment of the crisps and makes us think of freshness.

Laura Veirs - Warp and Weft
The right kind of start on this grey morning. Brighter later.
Verdi "Don Carlo" (original five act version in Italian, without cuts). Giulini, Domingo, Caballé, Milnes, Verrett, Raimondi. CD quality streamed from NAS through Nova.
I first had this on LPs years ago and then bought it on CDs. Now the CDs have been ripped and play gloriously through the Nova. As "The Gramophone" review states:
Giulini himself had slowed down since the live performances, but the blend of majesty and lyric beauty that he brings to the opera is hard to resist. The music glows warmly in his hands, as befits one of Verdi's most human dramas.
Wonderful music!

1967 - vinyl - UK pressing....
An album that has become one of my Desert Island favourites over the years. Although i enjoy their other albums, this for me is one of their best (along with OK Computer)
Radiohead - The Bends
