Diana Krall - Christmas Songs
Suspect she's gone a mince pie too far.
A new discovery for me - quite literally as I had never heard it before today when I Spotified it on a friend’s recommendation. Absolutely knockout singer/songwriting. A real Wow.
Now Playing......
John Abercrombie Quartet - Up and Coming
John Abercrombie (guitar), Marc Copland (piano), Drew Gress (double bass), and Joey Baron (drums)
Streaming on TIDAL....... Continuation of the exploration of the ECM catalogue. Through two tracks and enjoy John's guitar work with the other musicians interplay and synergy is fantastic. So far some beautiful and easy listening on this Thursday afternoon.
Note from ECM Records website here:
Guitarist John Abercrombie – who has recorded as a leader for ECM since 1974 – returns with a second album by his quartet featuring Marc Copland on piano, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling 39 Steps, the group’s 2013 album, the Financial Times said: “The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leader’s warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Copland’s piano… with bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions.” The same virtues of lyrical melody and harmonic/rhythmic subtlety are apparent with the new Up and Coming, though with even more emphasis on the enduring values of song. Abercrombie’s liquid phrasing and glowing tone – enabled by the thumb technique he has honed since eschewing a plectrum in recent years – animate his five originals and the pair by Copland, as well as a take on the Miles Davis classic “Nardis” done in the spirit of Bill Evans. Up and Coming has a twilight atmosphere, with melodic flow the guiding light.
Progtastic music from Mr Hackett on original(ish) vinyl.

Saw Antonio play on Tuesday night at the Electric Theatre in Guildford.
Fantastic guitar playing in a small intimate venue and such a nice guy to chat to afterwards.
He was also briefly joined on stage by Modeste Hugues, another brilliant guitarist originally from Madagascar with a unique African influence to his style of playing, great stuff!!
The Blue Nile - Hats
A tilt towards late night romance.

Congratulations, I do hope to have the opportunity to see him play at some point. It sounded like the setting along with the music made it a great show to attend!
Love his music!

John Abercrombie Quartet - 39 Steps
John Abercrombie (guitar), Marc Copland (piano), Drew Gress (double bass), and Joey Baron (drums)
Streaming on TIDAL........ Really enjoyed the pervious 'Up and Coming' album from John and wanted to move right on to another. So taking '39 Steps' out for a spin.
Note from the ECM Records website here:
John Abercrombie’s revised quartet provides Marc Copland with his first appearance on ECM. Yet guitarist and pianist are old allies, with an association stretching back forty years. In the early 1970s both were members of Chico Hamilton’s quartet, and at the dawn of fusion both played with pioneering jazz-rock band Dreams. Since the late 1990s they’ve revived their partnership in diverse context and have toured in formations ranging from piano-guitar duo to trio with Kenny Wheeler to the cooperative group Contact with Dave Liebman and Billy Hart. For much of the last decade Abercrombie and Copland have also each had bassist Drew Gress as a regular member of their respective bands so “39 Steps” draws on a network of trusted relationships. Jazz ballads and lyricism predominate on this disc with six tunes from Abercrombie’s pen, two Copland tunes, one collective improvisation, and a creative deconstruction of the old standard “Melancholy Baby”.

Used to have 4 of those discs in the 60's
Steve Vai: Surfing with the Alien (heavyweight vinyl re-release): because my son loves it and Vai is to the guitar what Dupre was to the 'cello: gatekeepers to the soul.

Andrea Bocelli - My Christmas
Streaming on TIDAL........ The missus is big on Christmas music so a little Andrea Bocelli to make sure there isn't a bag of coal under the tree on Christmas morning with my name on it.

Black Sabbath "In rock"
Iron Maiden "Hotel California"
Rainbow "Purple rain"
Thin Lizzy "The wall"
Time After Time: just perfect.
Just Finishing.......
Stephen Micus - Inland Sea
Streaming on TIDAL........ Something to ease off into the night
Note on ECM Records Website:
Inland Sea is Stephan Micus’ 22nd solo album for ECM, each one taking his audience on musical journeys to far-flung places and unique sound worlds. For decades, he has been travelling, collecting and studying musical instruments from all over the world and creating new music for them. Micus often combines instruments from different cultures and continents that would never normally be played together, adapting and extending them, and rarely playing them in a traditional manner. The instruments then become a cast of characters that help tell the particular story of that album. While he plays nine different instruments on Inland Sea, the lead role belongs to the nyckelharpa – a keyed fiddle from Sweden, with an array of other instruments and vocals providing layers and textures throughout.
Ton Koopman - Bach: cantatas
i really enjoy Bach's cantatas. This a CD with the 'highlights' of the cantata series conducted by Ton Koopman.

Love his music!
He is well worth seeing and tends to play small venues.
It was the third time I have seen him, different venues each time, and I am still amazed at how good he is!
John Taylor - Requiem for a Dreamer
A Christmas present from an old girlfriend a few years ago. So just what was she saying? ;-)
In an attempt to comprise on the music, while cooking with the wife:
Ray Lamontagne - Trouble
One of those records that I have really come to appreciate this year.
Out for its annual play - Now The Christmas Album. It may be a bit cheesy, but there are some great Christmas pop songs on this collection. I notice that this has been rereleased amid the current vinyl resurgence, but it omits many of the tunes which feature on the original.
