Joshua Bell & Jeremy Denk - French impressions

From allmusic.com:

French Impressions, Joshua Bell's 2012 release on Sony, presents three great violin sonatas, prime examples of French chamber music that have been cherished for their emotional power and nostalgic coloration. Indeed, the Violin Sonata in D minor of Camille Saint-Saëns and the Violin Sonata in A major of César Franck are so significant in French culture and evocative of their time, they are thought by literary scholars to have served as inspiration for the fictional Vinteuil Sonata in Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu. With Maurice Ravel's Violin Sonata reflecting a more modern and playful approach to the genre, the program explores the warm sonorities and subtle moods of French music, as channeled through the classical sonata form, and the refined expression of all three works is lovingly handled by Bell and his accompanist, Jeremy Denk. Bell's playing ranges from gossamer fine lines to thickly resinous attacks, and his command of the violin's timbres reveals the rich possibilities to be found in these pieces. For his part, Denk provides flexible and understated support, with a piano part that ranges from robust activity where needed to atmospheric delicacy. Sony's sound is clear and focused and gives the violin central placement, so all the shades of expression and dynamics are easily heard above the piano.

(1994)

Another very fine album from the Canadian rocksters that very few folk on this side of the pond seem to know of or appreciate.

Contains my favourite Hip track.

The Rolling Stones. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll. On original vinyl from 1974. Long time since I spun this one.

The album where I thought they started to lose that rawness in their sound. I call it the Versace era.

Mixed feelings with songs between average and excellent: Pieta Brown - Post cards. Still a remarkable voice and great companions (amongst them a certain Knopfler), but I find the older records more genuine.

Used to have all her earlier stuff including a couple of self released albums that were never officially released but sold them all over a number of years. She has never quite done it for me.

Shame as her father is Greg Brown who is popular on this forum.

I bought this really for the gorgeous cover of 'Golden Slumbers' but it's a good wander through their extensive catalogue (and reminds me that i need to pull out their older albums for a listen). A fine collection.

Essential Yo-yo Ma (cd 2) - UnitiServe SSD and DC1

The SQ of the recording and replay is exquisite. A wonderful selection of music for the officianado and any lover of music. It raises my spirit even higher. My first experience of Yo-yo Ma, and not the last now.

Getting in the mood, Tidal (via Roon) is excellent for finding albums, this one full of interesting takes on well known Christmas fare and this lady has some voice.

Nice one, Stefan, though at the beginning of every youtube viewed in Illinois these days you have to go through a political advertising bought by JB Pritzker the billionaire who is running for the governorship of the state, so after this kind of yammering any piece of music gets an extra positive flavor.

Max,

Thanks again for highlighting this particular exquisite Evans album. It is the mostly played disc (by far) here in the last month.
