Sonny Rollins - Alfie

Allmusic.com:

Tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins loaned his flair for the dramatic to the score for the film Alfie, accompanying the story of what the liner notes describe as "the involuntary education of a hipster." Arranged by Oliver Nelson, the soundtrack follows the character's evolution from the carefree, rakish Lothario of "Alfie's Theme" to the contemplative, somewhat broken man reflected in "Alfie's Theme Differently." Rollins attempts to capture the textures of life through his incisive and energetic playing, his coherent improvisations, and variations on musical themes. While "Alfie's Theme" and its variants make the most lasting impression, "He's Younger Than You Are" is touching, laced with regret. And the sensual, relaxed "On Impulse" has a nice sense of immediacy.

(1975)

Their follow up to the classic Tres Hombres.  The vinyl has side one as a live recording in New Orleans while the second side is a studio recording, this original early CD rip follows the same tracklist.

Hank Mobley - Mobleys message

Allmusic.com:

Saxophonist Hank Mobley's 1956 date for Prestige, Mobley's Message, is an often overlooked gem of the era. Joining Mobley here is an all-star cast of musicians including trumpeter Donald Byrd, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor. Essentially a high-energy blowing session, the album features some stellar bop-oriented improvisation and is well worth seeking out.

Jon Balke & Magnetic North Orchestra - Kyanos

Jon Balke & Magnetic North Orchestra - Kyanos

Jon Balke (piano, keyboards), Per Jørgensen (trumpet, vocal), Arve Henriksen (trumpet), Morten Halle (saxophones, flute), Svante Henryson (violoncello), Anders Jormin (double-bass), and Audun Kleive (drums, percussion).

Streaming on NAS.......  Picking up the beat and getting some movement going......

Note from ECM Records website here:

The first ECM album in nine years by Norwegian pianist/composer/arranger Jon Balke and his “orchestra”, now streamlined to a septet of top-flight Scandinavian soloists. “Kyanos” is Greek for “blue”, and the album pulsates with intense colour. Balke has developed into an exceptionally skilled arranger and his blending of textures as well as his strong melodic sense are to the fore in this striking and arresting album. Like Duke Ellington or Gil Evans before him, Balke writes with the idiosyncratic sounds and personalities of his musicians in mind, and makes the fullest use of the resources available to him. He still understands jazz as “the sound of surprise”, and his melodies take unexpected turns.

Fancied some Stones, so here's just about the best overview of the first decade. On double CD:

Because it's a great time of the year to indulge and play some old bands and some old favourites.

This was one of my best 'discoveries' of 2017, Graeme. A great album IMO.

Anouar Brahem - Conte di I'Incroyable Amour

Anouar Brahem -  Conte di I'incroyable amour

Anouar Brahem (oud), Barbaros Erköse (clarinet), Kudsi Erguner (nai), and Lassad Hosni (percussion)

Streaming from NAS.........  Easy listening on a Thursday morning.

ECM Records Review found here:

After a memorable ECM debut with Barzakh, Anouar Brahem recorded this even more memorable sophomore effort one year later. Carrying over percussionist Lassad Hosni, Brahem welcomes Turkish musicians Kudsi Erguner on ney and Barbaros Erköse on clarinet. Erköse, a gypsy music specialist, adds rich colors to an already dense palette, weaving tethers that pull us into tender worlds. His duets with Erguner (“Etincelles” and “Peshrev Hidjaz Homayoun”) stand out as some of the album’s most flowing. The title track brings the patter of clay drums, weaving a gorgeous ney into our vision. (The melodies and rhythms here put this listener immediately in mind of the song “I Love You” from Omar Faruk Tekbilek’s album One Truth.) Captivating. Erguner shines again in “Diversion.” Slaloming through every drummed pillar with the conviction of a bird in search of prey and yet with the delicacy of an angel avoiding such violence, he brings a sense of history to every lilting gesture. “Nayzak” revives the clarinet amid oud and drums for a stunning taste of mountains and the plains. The album’s meat, though, comes in Brahem’s unaccompanied storytelling. From the dawn chorus of “L’oiseau de bois” and invigorating virtuosity of “Battements,” through the tender air “Le chien sur les genoux de la devineresse,” and on to “Epilogue,” there is unimaginable depth of yearning in every twang and strum.

Just back home after spending Chrissy away with the family, and have noticed that everyone seems to be indulging in playing old favourites.

So here's my "new" / "old" favourite, and it's sounding mighty fine, in spite of the system having been powered down for a few days.

The Rolling Stones - Blue & Lonesome.

Just some old geezers doing what they do best.

It's a very fine compilation indeed and Rolled Gold was some of the first music I went out and purchased after having my 3rd collection of music nicked!

Still Mariusz Duda's best album (Riverside's frontman), stunning prog rock n' soft metal allied to his voice which always hits the right spot.

What a super record this is. Thank you so much to whoever it was who recommended it.

Wilko Johnson / Roger Daltrey - Going Back Home.

Another "new' / "old" favourite .............. a real "pub R 'n B" workout from two legends ......... a cracking album, IMHO.

Go-Go Penguin - Man Made Object

A happy recollection of the night I saw them this year. A dust dry Paul Scholes type figure on bass.

(1970 | 1994)

It would be a pity not to finish off the year with some old Genesis...

Unless I have totally lost my bearings, that is a shocking photo. The Royal Festival Hall is on the South Bank and is very approximately 110 degrees left of that image on the North Bank.

That remark cheered my up, [@mention:22826037044169924] ! I never thought about this, but always found the scenery a great fit to the music being played. Now learning that it was fake news, makes me laugh

I was enjoying watching Supersonic until I lost my inter web connection thingy.

So dug the CD out instead.
