The 2017 obituaries section on the BBC news this morning was a timely reminder to give this fine album a play.

Haitink's 1988 Nozze enjoyed only a brief shelf life, and was never re-issued. It has received some flak for lack of excitement or overt comedy, but over the years, this has grown to be one of my favorite versions on disk. All singers were in their primes when this was recorded, and Haitink and part of the cast had the experience of conducting the opera in Glyndebourne a few years prior (note: Glyndebourne has an excellent performance archive). As a performance, it just gels.

Cheers,

EJ
