Phono Amps

I have an old Rega Planar 3 sat on a shelf which I am looking to resurrect, any views on a reasonably priced Phono Amp: Rega Fono or 3rd party , to feed into my NaimUniti?
Much will depend on the cartridge you are running with the Rega Planar 3. If something like a Rega Elys then the Rega phono stage is probably a better match than Naim's own Stageline. However, the Stageline N works well with many other cartridges like the A-Ts. The Uniti has a powered AUX2 socket so you can run the Stageline with no need for a dedicated power supply until the urge to upgrade takes hold.

Richard, I also cannot decice on phono stage. Do you know if Stageline N and Ortofon 2M series cartridges sound good with each other?
Andrius, I haven't tried the Ortofon 2Ms with the Stageline so couldn't say for certain. I'm sure somebody else here has though..

And hopefully a new cartridge. But which?
Tape out should work on the Mira.

Thanks for the response, will give it a go, cartridge is a red Rega probably Elys form the 90's ..gulp
Myron
Give it a new cartridge
A faulthy one can ruin your vinyl
Maybe you can get a trade-in by your Rega dealer
Otherwise AT95 is a good choice on the cheapskate
Rega also do the Carbon, which appears to be a Rega branded AT3600L - a great fun sounding cartridge that can really surprise with its capabilities for such a tiny investment.

Why not? Don't know this preamp but I assume it don't have any tone controls, loudness button etc. Use the 'Preamp out' to your other preamp's AUX input.

No, use the tape out. That way, it will bypass the volume control and just be at line level, which is what you want here.
I once did this with an Ion Obelisk. I needed a MM phono stage and realised I didn't have one handy so had to press an integrated amp I had spare into service. The MM stage in the Obelisk was rather good as I recall...
With the money saved by buying a Rega Carbon as Richard suggests, you can have a new belt too. Then you are really rockin'.
Chris
And your trousers won't fall down either.
Save your money on the phono pre by using the tape out on the Mira.
Buy a new cartridge, Elys 2 for your TT, possibly a new belt too. Yes a bit of an investment, but best chance of enjoyment.

I use a 2M blue with stageline N, and I've not been disappointed. I moved from more expensive MC cartridges after my son broke 2 of them and find the blue is both excellent vfm and suits the stageline very well.
Rega phono...
I would start with the Rega A2D .. great value at only $175 .. I ran one with my RP6 for quite some time before I abandoned vinyl. It's a wonderfully rambunctious phono .. use it while you audition other more "serious" phono amps, though you very well may end up sticking with it ..

Myron gives no indication of wanting to abandon vinyl, quite the opposite!
Chris
Quite right Chris, I have kept over a 100 albums that I couldn't release when I went digital.

The Pro-Ject phono stages all are a very good value and surprisingly good. The PhonoBox S is a great little phono amp that has a myriad of configuration to match it to any cartridge.

I look at Pro-Ject stages as one of possible alternatives to Stageline N or Fono MM mkII (still not decided which one to get). Any chance you heard Phono box DS, DS+ or any tube versions and maybe even compared to Rega or Naim?

Christopher: Is your concern that my statement may sway Myron to give up on vinyl ? I have read and reread my initial comment and see no connection with what I wrote and Myron's stated intention to continue with vinyl ..

Evidently John, that was my concern! But no matter, Myron subsequently indicated that he wanted to play his old vinyl again.
Cheers, Chris
