Hugo 2

Posted by: analogmusic on 06 January 2017

Hugo 2 just been announced, it now has 49,000 Taps and a 10 E pulse array DAC.

Also interesting is that is had adjustable filter settings, with Hugo and Mojo voice of settings, very smart, a good upgrade path for Mojo owners.

Hugo 2 is now chargeable by USB rather than wall wart.

I wonder though how much better it sounds compared to Hugo..... Not sure it will be that much though.

it may sound just like Dave   nooo just kidding.... not to worry analog...

I also think it comes with a remote, which helps if using it as a preamp.

Are you stuck with old version or will they update it to new ?

Happy if it brings down s/h prices allthough I'm not sure its my taste really, need a homedem which is hard with no dealers in my country

But Emre.................Dave2 could well be just around the corner and what then for analogmusic and his new friend?!

Posted on: 06 January 2017 by analogmusic

No I think you are stuck with Hugo 1 as it has a different chassis

Well Hugo and Dave do sound like they came from the same company, much like NDX and NDS do sound like Naim sources.

Well, Blu 2 as a transport for Dave has been announced too.

that is a 8000 GBP CD transport for Dave.

But it has some massive FPGA that can decode with a million tap filter (Rob Watts ultimate objective). Hugo 2 now has 49000 taps, and Dave has 168,000 taps.

Oh I'm not worried about that.

Tidal just released the MQA update and listening to some 24 bit albums on my Macbook pro with MQA, if this is the future of music, we are living in exciting times.

The Poly network module for the Mojo looks rather interesting.

Who has MQA ? What about Hugo?

I've just read through the blurb and specs and I notice that the quoted battery running time has dropped rather alarmingly from 12 hours to just 7.  Could this be an error?

I noticed that the headphone output stage is described as "Class A". I am not sure if the Hugo was class A but this could be one of the reason along with higher tap count and consumption coming from illuminating the additional buttons.

It isn't an error, it was expected when they changed the FPGA and increased sound quality as Hugo 2 has more processing power then Hugo 1.

However it can be charged by USB, unlike Hugo 1.

Personally I am curious about Hugo 2, but Hugo 1 to me (after hearing the full range from Mojo, Hugo, Hugo TT and Dave) remains for me personally an outstanding performer at the price.

I don't have my Hugo 1 anymore, but not sure I would rush out and buy a Hugo 2 and sell my Hugo 1 for it.

I wonder if Chord will cease production of the Hugo 1?

I am looking forward to the 2 and hope there is a distinct SQ lift from the 1, as have not wanted to stretch to a TT or DAVE (least not till my children are off the payroll). I have been itching to move my Hugo from the main system to a study system where its excellent variable volume output could tame the Nait 2's meagre usable line volume range.

I do hope not! As it happens I'm currently using a forum member's Hugo in my system. Having tried DAVE a couple of times at home, I definitely prefer Hugo. The comparison with my QBD76HDSD is interesting; the latter has a shade more PRaT but the Hugo is more detailed. I marginally prefer the former, but if I had a Hugo I'd be sticking with it.

Hmmm interesting remarks Tony.

I demonstrated Dave vs Hugo to a friend of mine and when I removed Dave and put Hugo, the look on his face said it all, which he confirmed verbally, "Dave is much better"

As good as Hugo is, (and it is extremely good), Dave is better.

Of course your mileage varies, it is ok, we don't have the same speakers, amp, cables, source, room, ears and taste.

Possibly longer than for Core.

Clearly the HUGO 2 is an exciting product and appears to be a significant advance in technology over the original.

The question for me is where does this leave the TT?  Bearing in mind the TT is based on the original HUGO, it now looks somewhat out of date and I can't imagine anyone buying one until the inevitable TT 2 arrives. I'm surprised TT 2 wasn't launched at the same time!

Posted on: 06 January 2017 by analogmusic

I don't have any inside information, but I imagine there will be a Hugo TT 2, but with a similar internal power supply as the Dave. Just a matter of time.

At the same time, Hugo 1 and Hugo TT are still extremely good !

Posted on: 06 January 2017 by Pauleb

Agreed the original HUGO and TT are as you say extremely good.

However with the leap in technology of the HUGO 2, it's highly likely it will surpasses TT in SQ terms and at a significantly lower price point. HUGO 2 even has a remote making it much more attractive for those wishing to use it in a home based system.

I suspect a TT 2 isn't far away as I would suggest TT sales will stop dead from today.

"Chord has also improved the battery life with the Hugo 2, increasing it to 14 hours"

Posted on: 06 January 2017 by tonym

When comparing the Chord DACs, or any other bits of kit for that matter, folk really must not be too swayed by technical specifications. It really must be about the sound, in your own system. My experience with DAVE vs. QBD76HDSD wasn't just down to some strange hearing anomaly on my part - some very distinguished forum members felt the same, having listened to both in my system and without the dubious benefit of my own opinion.

Posted on: 06 January 2017 by analogmusic

Ahh but we are talking about musical performance not technical specifications.  No matter what the technical specifications, I can only judge by musical performance.

I totally understand your position, but to my ears in my own system Dave is considerably better than Hugo.

We'll have none of that sensible talk here Tony !

Where did that quote come from?  If true, it's good news, but Chord need to clean up their copy as it's down as 7 hours on the Hugo 2 product page on their website.

My own Hugo hasn't got anywhere near to running out of juice yet between charges, but 7 hours is quite a drop and about as much as I get from the Pono Player.
