unitserve rips vs core rips
Posted by: French Rooster on 07 January 2017
this topic is not accessible anymore. unitserve rips are better than core rips and naim don't like it?
Naim know it's needed, and are on the case, but it doesn't take a great brain to realise that it should have been fully functional before release. Meta editing is absolutely fundamental to computer audio.
I still can't believe this. A device which does not rip correctly, which does not let you modify metadata to suit, does not let you choose which tracks you rip, or where you put them. And you pay money for it? Any old bargain bin laptop running free software will do better.
I agree with LIKESMUSIC, it's simply unbelievable. The GNU / Linux platform supports bit perfect ripping (cdparanoia, Rubyripper), metadata editing (lltag, ExFalso, EasyTag, ...), customizable UPnP indexing (MinimServer), playback from local data, NAS data, TIDAL, Qobuz, internet radio (MPD, upmpdcli) and effective data transfer and mirroring tools (rsync, unison) flawlessly. What the hell needs to be reinvented here?
Just listen to the core and you Will be Very quiet. If you dont want problems like this you buy one next Year. I also have Some minor problems But the way its sounds is what is important. And i can tell you its absolutely super.
OMG, Looks like a big elephant in the room !
AFAICT the Core misses a few micro seconds of silence from the start of a CD that it is asked to rip.
Two whole threads are devoted to this catastrophic disaster.
One thread is deleted because copyright laws might have been broken and Naim might end up in court. The Forum has demanded that Naim publish their detailed specification for this piece of equipment (something they have never felt the need to do in over 35 years), and then.............and then............
..........we learn that the Core can only rip whole CDs, with no track selection and no editing of meta data............and probably lots of other limitations as well !!!! some elephant !
Anyway, I now demand that Trevor Wilson regroups his guilty employees NOW (never mind that it is the weekend) back in Salisbury and provides us, the elite members of this here forum, with a running commentary on how these feckless serfs are progressing with the redesign of hardware and software such that new or modified Cores will be delivered Sunday afternoon to all new owners, both disgruntled and otherwise, with a complete and detailed specification and RIP perfect, global editing funtionality.
There. Got that of my chest. feel better now.
For those whose first language is not English, please look up the word "irony" !
I thought I'd try to look up a funny way of pointing out the difference between irony and sarcasm, so I googled sarcasm vs irony. Google duly presented me with a definition. Which was completely wrong. My inner grammar Nazi has had to go for a lie down and a good, hard think about the poor choices he's made in life.
Dave***t,
Just so you don't loose too much sleep, or have nightmares, I could have written ....."sooner or later...."

The other part of the post was simply a history lesson.............devoid of any "Names"
Not sure about the silence at the start of CDs - perhaps that is another issue I am not aware of??????? - The issue I am aware of drops 2.7mS of stereo samples from the start of every track and adds 2.7mS of stereo silence to the end of every track and thereby introducing a possible discontinuity between tracks - an artificial jump in sample value thereby possibly causing a tick or click sound dependent on how the track and CD is mastered.. Whether the 2.7mS samples on the track be silence, music, talking etc really I am sure the Core doesn't care what the media sounds like.
I guess some probably don't mind small possible glitches between their rips (depending how the track is mastered) - but even if you do, and I certainly would do, I am sure Naim will be repairing shortly - infact did we not see a post from Naim saying a software update is being prepared... therefore in the grand scheme of things no great deal... just hold off perhaps doing any mass ripping until resolved... no emotion required...
Hi all. The team are still working and a beta release was made to beta at 12.14 this morning. This particular release doesn't directly address the commentary above but I know the software team are on that already also, I expect them to be in touch this weekend.
Trevor
Trevor,
Thanks so much for the update. Clearly, from Jan's earlier comments, the team would be addressing this. I appreciate that you post on this forum, and I look forward to hearing the results (in more ways than one).

Now come on Don, this is serious stuff! How dare you be so flippant!
Anyway, I'm sure the Naim boffins will sort this out in short order. Personally, I suspect most folks either have lots of rips already, or if they're starting from scratch, rather than sitting in front of the Core with a stack of CDs it'd be a damn sight easier to rip them from the comfort of a computer chair using DbPoweramp (other makes are available) & transfer them across.
For me it was a damn sight easier and quicker to use the unitiserve than a computer.
I must admit until this thread, ripping to me has been such a benign activity..go into study and sit at desk, unwrap new CD, put CD into iMac CD reader... dbpoweramp pops up... a screen of metadata appears and suggested album art, occasionally need to edit... very occasionally need to scan CD cover using study printer scanner and/or type in meta data.. press the start button.. couple of mins later CD gets ejected from iMac CD reader.. put CD back into CD case... wander back into music room, sit down, run Naim app, and the new album is there ready to play... enjoy..
You mean there might be another way Simon. To me the most difficult part of ripping a new CD is getting the cellophane cover off.
Mike so true, glad it's not just me...

Also easier with an NS01!
Well... good to see it's being worked on. Gives a new perspective to an old phrase 'bit perfect ripping'.
Off to unwrap a new CD arrival - Jean Michel Jarre 'Oxygene 3'...
With the unitiserve there is no need to press the start button!

Yes that can be so tiring with the NS01. But at least there's no risk of scratching the disc on a drawer loading machine such as the aforementioned.
Hi guys,
This thread is all wonderful 'n all, but how does the Core perform into a DAC over DC1 into a Hugo/Naim Dac versus say an NDX?
Any thoughts. Natural, musical, digital edge free sound is the goal.
I have a Zenith at the moment but very curious about the Core into Hugo.
Cheers
Adam

A CD !!! You own a player (or two) capable of 24-bit & you buy a CD

When Moses was offered commandments on tablets of stone, he asked 'OK, but how much?' the answer came back 'for you my son, they are for free' to which Moses replied 'a dank, for free!! khidesh!!, I'll take ten'

Weren't there 15 but one tablet was dropped and broken? At least in Mel Brook's movie that's how it went....
