Headphone system - Chord Mojo vs. Hugo?

Posted by: glevethan on 13 January 2017

I am looking at setting up a small headphone system using my iPhone 7 as a source for FLAC's and uncompressed Tidal streams.  This will be completely independent of my big system.

With the absence of the headphone jack the iPhone 7 now outputs a digital signal from the lighting port.  In this scenario the quality of DAC is more important than ever.  The headphone amplifier portion of the integrated DAC/amp then follows in order of importance.

Does anyone have feedback about the Mojo vs. Hugo?  As stated these will not be used with my big system - I have a Klimax DS which performs those duties for the 552/500.

This system would sit on a small tabletop - iPhone 7 running into Mojo or Hugo and a set of headphones plugged in.  Nice and simple.

Mojo - small and cheap and portable

Hugo - larger, expensive, not so portable

i like my mojo -- use it a lot on flights

Ever compare it to the Hugo?

And there's a new Hugo to add to the possibilities ...

That I am aware of.  My sleuthing seems to indicate that the Mojo is fairly close to the original Hugo at a fraction of the cost.  I would think that the new Hugo 2 significantly ups the bar so as to differentiate itself from its baby brother Mojo

400 pounds versus 1400 pounds for something used with noise cancelling headphones on a transatlantic flight? I think the decision there is really rather simple, dont you?

In your scenario I would go for portability. In an office context the advise would be differently. So Mojo it is.

Mojo or AQ black/ red depending on headphones for iphone as a source

But I am not using it on a flight with ANC headphones. I will be using it for my home setup with a good pair of headphones.

ANC headphones for airline travel is a different story. Those will be either the new B&O H9 wireless with ANC or the B&W P7 wireless sans ANC

For the home it will be my old pair of Grado RS 1 and perhaps a new pair of Focal Elears or B&W P9.  Portability is not a concern

If you are talking about home only, then there are a whole heap of interesting mains powered items. I find the Sennheiser unit to be very flexible and has excellent connectivity, including AES/EBU

Try both. Personally, I prefer Mojo. It also measures better than Hugo. Big plus for Hugo is crossfeed function when listening using headphones.

I have compared the mojo and Hugo running off my I-pad lightning connection and camera connection kit, sounded identical to me,I say go for the mojo. The Hugo has a better layout for connections in a home setup though.I am not familiar with the I-phone 7 though,I assume it is the same connection as the I-pad?

I am starting to think that the Mojo is a giant killer and extremely close to the Hugo.  That is why the Hugo 2 will probably significantly up the equation.

I think the Mojo might be the way to go.  I want to demo the Focal Elears and see how they do.

Another option is to completely change course - veering into even more simplicity - and try the Audeze Sine with cipher cable.  The cipher has a built in DAC and amplifier with a lighting end.  The ultimate in simplicity - Audeze Sine plugged directly into my iPhone 7.  It does not get more minimal than that.  Has anyone demoed them?

Yes I think the Hugo is better for use in main systems which for many will be more discerning than many headphones

Chalk up another vote for the crossfeed feature -- a distortion added to counter the isolation-distortion each ear experiences with headphones.

I don't have a Hugo, but I love this feature on my Total BitHead.  The lack of it stopped me from buying/upgrading to the Mojo.

I wish HeadLine had it.

And being on the fence read Schiit Audio story off head-fi for free or download, as I did, off Amazon. This will add extra points to your confusion ;-)

Mojo for sure

I had a demo of the Mojo today using Tidal from an Ipad. It would certainly be a big leap from the standard phone/pad output but doing A-B against my Fiio X3ii DAP it wasn't £400 'better'. It is a thing of beauty to hold but I couldn't justify the 'mild' improvement. The store didn't have the correct lead to connect my Fiio directly to the Mojo unfortunately....

Headphones were my Senn Momentum 2's
