Seeting up MuSo without internet activated

Posted by: CraigD on 16 January 2017

Hi Everyone,

Two questions - after moving house:

Hopefully an easy one - I've just moved house & about to buy a MuSo. I've sorted a new internet connection & it won't be active until Feb unfortunately.

I've digitised my CD collection onto a Synology NAS, ready for the MuSo....

1) Will this run though a router with no internet connection? Obviously internet radio won't work.

2) When the internet goes live, will that b@ll@cks up all the settings, or would the internet radio just be 'found' and start working?

Just wondering whether I should hold off on buying the MuSo until after the internet is live, basically.

Second - placement. Basically, wife wants to buy a funky cabinet that would place the MuSo at about 'bicep height'. I'm old school & want it at about knee height. Either way it'll be in the corner of a room. What would be the general preference on here? I've heard that placement is critical, but perhaps more with respect to distance from walls etc.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, your mu-so will be fine without a working internet connection. You will be able to control the mu-so with the Naim app and stream music from your NAS without an internet connection.

For software updates, iRadio, TIDAL, etc. you need an internet connection...

Yes you should be ok as you have built your own network even while not connected to the internet. And of course updates if any will not flow to the Muso but that shouldn't be a big deal for such a short period.

Thanks both for the replies. Does anyone have any guidance re the placement question?

I agree with your wife; my mu-so Qb is placed well above knee hight.

But please experiment with placement once you have the unit in your own home.

All of my Mu-So QB's are placed at worktop / countertop level or on a chest of drawers for example.

I failed miserably at this despite helpful advice from this Board. I was trying to set up a Mu-So in a flat where I didn't need internet (I couldn't used a wired connection either). No router. Naim told me I had to have a router.

In the end I gave up and paid for internet. Plain sailing from there on in.

You do have to have a router because otherwise the app can't control the muso.  But you don't need Internet except as described earlier in this thread.

David is correct; you need to have a way to control the mu-so with the app and -more important - to get access to the music on your NAS

The MuSo has Bluetooth®/aptX so any smartphone with recent bluetooth version will control it via Naim App. Internet not required, but think its important for software upates

I really don't think the Naim app works over Bluetooth. It needs Wifi I think, which is why you need a router.

David, I wonder if the Bluetooth version on Smartphone is important. Pretty sure mine does, will check

You can send content to a muso with Bluetooth from a smartphone, but I think you need wifi to use the App to control the input selection, volume, settings etc

A router does two important things - it establishes a network INSIDE your home (the network that the Mu-So needs to connect to the App on your iPhone/iPad) and it connects that home network to the Internet OUTSIDE of your home.  You don't need that last connection to get it to work, but you do need the router and the network INSIDE your home it creates (unless you just want to play directly using Bluetooth, w/out the Naim App).
