Issues with HDX Internet Radio Beta Testing

Posted by: Purple66 on 29 July 2011

Are there any tester who have managed to get the ISO disc image for SW Version 1.6 from the download link provided from Naim?

I tried the download under MAC and under Windows in in both cases I found no iso file.

Recommendations to solve this issue are welcome.

Steve - thanks.

A couple of comments in reply:

- "a reboot might be required":

  • a) this is uncertain ('might');  and
  • b) if a reboot really is required each time an Added Station is created, for me this is not all that user-friendly a solution. After all, we do not have to reboot the HDX each time we add new material to the HDX's native storage, to a defined Music Store, to a defined NAS drive or to a USB drive ..... Leaving aside the fact that rebooting an HDX can take several minutes (n.b.: one has to shut it down cleanly first, which too takes time), it's counter-intuitive to have to re-boot in the sole scenario of adding a station via vTuner, especially as it seems that this is the *only* way for the HDX user to add a station. The system should surely be capable of digesting an Added Station 'on the fly'.

- is it the case that if a user succeeds in creating an Added Station on the vTuner server but that station is in fact a duplicate of one of the (1,600 ++) stations already listed by vTuner, then no update will be sent to the user's HDX because of that duplication? If so, then the vTuner web page set up ought to come back with an error message at the time when the addition is made.

That leaves open the question of how the vTuner copes (i.e., what happens in practice) when an HDX user successfully adds a really new station, and then some days/weeks/months, later the vTuner server system adds that station to its own indexed catalogue of stations; does the user's defined Additional Station just disappear (because it is then a duplicate of an indexed station)?

If so, I suggest that it would be a very friendly thing to do to send the user a message to tell them, before the user goes mental looking for their suddenly vanished station. After all, the vTuner server knows the e-mail addresses we have declared when registering.

One final (separate) point: at least for US-based stations, I suggest that we also need to be able to see single consolidated country-level listing versions of all the stations in all the 50 odd states (i.e., consolidated versions sorted by US station name, genre, etc.). At present for stations in the US  listing, it seems that the user has no alternative but to drill down to the state level (e.g. Ohio) to see the detail. It's not realistic in my view to expect users to go through that process 50 times (OK, on average 25 times ...) if they know the name of the station that they are looking for but do not know which specific geographic state the station is "based" in. (The inconvenience is all the more odd in the context and "cloud" based service provision).

For stations in the UK, we do not have to drill down to individual county levels, after all, do we?

As above re US stations.

Simple suggestion for finding stations; could we not have a text search function? I wanted to find NPR All Songs podcast but have no idea what state it originates from so was unable to find it.

The vTuner interface on the web does seem to offer a Search function (by Station or by Podcast):-

http://myradio.naimaudio.com/s...amp;sSearchInput=npr

Based on a Google search, I think that the station you want may emanate from Washington DC?

Thanks, but I was meaning on the HDX front panel or the app. Not much help me finding it on vTuner if I cannot get vTuner to add it!

hello all,

ok, so some points to cover, its always good to get real feedback

1. the added stations feature. - this is a place to add stations THAT ARE NOT ALREADY IN VTUNER. So you need to know the URL etc for the radio station you wish to listen to. Added stations is not presets, there exists no way to make a station a preset via naim.vtuner.com, you need to do this via the Server User Interface (web, front panel, TV or Desktop client).

2. country specific all stations for USA etc - this menu is totally driven via vTuner and not Naim, we display exactly what is sent down the internet to us. I shall ask place this in the "to review" file from this beta and ask them.

3. if you add a station to "added stations" it should appear within15 minutes at most. i just tried it here and it was available on the next browse into that menu (1 minute).

4. you can add any station you wish to added stations - vTuner wont stop you and we will display it, nor will vTuner wipe it later if they do add it, this infomration is tied to the MAC address of the server.

5. the > icon next to a naim.vtuner.com listed station is so you can play it on your lcoal PC/MAC. it will not add it to the added stations list.

6. if you wish to try a added stations experience please try the following.

   a. log into vTuner using your mac address.

   b. click my added stations - you will be prompted to login - do this

   c. click added stations again (if required)

   d. in the following fields add this information

   Station Name: Radio 7

   Desc: Radio 7

   Station URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r7_aaclca.pls

   location: UK

   Genre: Mixed

   type: aac

   bitrate: 128

e: save this , then browse to your added stations - you should see Radio 7 listed.

References some of the issues people have raised:

1. upgrade issues - we are talking to the people on a one2one basis to determine the issue.

2. HDX-SSD that is breaking up on NAS playback - again we are investigating this now.

General information

if you have a issue please email support@naimaudio.com, we aren't leaving our beta team alone during this week

can i ask that all participants email there results and findings to the above email address by the morning of the 8th August please. Advance notification if things go wrong is fine!

finally, thanks team, its great to see that people are really using the beta and feeding back.
