Audio Device Settings
Posted by: Kage on 05 August 2011
Hi. Thanks to all the help and advice I recieved in my previous posts.
Currently setting up my Mac Mini and I read in the dCS guide to make sure your audio device output was set to the same rate as the source ie 44.1. It doesn't say anything about changing the bit rating (16, 24 etc). In the guide it shows the bit set at 24 with 44.1. I'm burning my cd's into iTunes as AIFF files but aren't they still 16 bit copies? Should I change my output to 16 or leave it on 24 bit?
Thanks once again.
Have you experimented with the Settings in Preferences? I strongly recommend (from my experience) to try enabling Upsampling. It does something on my system that makes everything else gaslight as a famous conductor once said of CD

I had a look at Bit Perfect, but couldn't seem to download it without logging on to Google Docs, so I gave up on it.
Bit Perfect's available for download from the "App. Store" at £2.99p Mr Fawkes.
After reading this thread last night I downloaded it and, by golly, it's rather good! I've been using Pure Music for a while because it worked with iTunes but Bit Perfect is rather nicer and does sound better; heaven knows why but I don't care really. A true bargain!
Thanks Tony - I'll give it a try
As a follow on question from this thread, when ripping CDs in iTunes what is the best / optimum setting?
In iTunes/Preferences/Import Settings I chose AIFF as the codec and currently have the Sample Rate set to Auto, Sample Size: 16-bit and Channels: Stereo. Or should the Sample Rate be set to 44.1 or 48 kHz instead? I figured it is best left to Auto as some HD CDs may be 16/48? Or are all CDs 16/44.1 no matter what and hence the Auto setting makes no sense?
Does anyone know?
Many thanks

I've purchased Bitperfect and have a "speaker" or whatever it is, in the dashboard but if I click it nothing happens, I had a dialogue box flash up briefly but since nothing.
What should I see? Has it loaded properly?

After starting Bitperfect you will see a logo at top right of your desktop. It will be the left most icon of the grouping on the right hand side. Click on it and a drop down menu will appear. choose "Preferences" . You will then have three screens to set it up. If in doubt, simply use the defaults initially to test it out. But do check that "Start iTunes on Startup" is ticked (which it normally is by default). You can easily check this by starting Bitperfect, you will normally see the iTunes icon dancing up and down as it is started by Bitperfect. I have the Bitperfect (and iTunes) icons in my Dock. If you are using a MacBook with the Remote App, set the energy preferences to Display Sleep after around 1 minute. This saves processor power being wasted on refreshing the screen. Interestingly, even after closing the lid and then later re-opening from sleep, there is no need to sign in with your password. You can still connect to your MB with the Remote App and control iTunes as usual. Within a minute the screen will darken and you can ignore the MB altogether. At least that is the case with Lion on my MB Pro.
Good luck.

Richard clicking the icon does nothing, that is the problem. Info for the application says it is 4.1MB but it doesn't seem to activate.

Gee, I wish I could help. But in all my experiences with Apple, things just work. I suppose you did DL it from the App Store for use with an Apple product, right? Probably obviously, yes. But that is the sum total of the help I can offer. I suggest you Email the developer. He can be contacted here:
Tim M <bitperfectsound@gmail.com>
Or post a query in this Forum:

Tim goes under the moniker, agentsim. He is exceptionally helpful and friendly. I would be surprised if he cannot help you.

Thanks for that Richard, I'll follow up after work.
OK I have now spotted the little icon on the very top bar, where you said it should be Richard.
I just didn't process your information properly, I don't automatically think of looking there.
It has delivered Bitperfect 0.32. I see some one else said 0.29 was Beta maybe this the production version?
So I have sorted out how to get Bitperfect to work(ish).
BP says 'stopped' when playing a radio stream, (probably) correct.
I can see that when 16 or 24 bit 44.1 file is played, that changes to reflect the song's format.
96/192 anything does not produce any sound.
Does BP automatically change the settings in Audio MIDI setup?

I am using the latest version of BP, I believe it is 0.32, which now does not work with up sampling on my system without some nasty occasional noises. So I have disabled up sampling. Some DACs upsample themselves anyway, as does my Essensio. So, I suggest you try disabling up sampling if it was checked in your BP Preferences.
If that does not help, maybe your DAC does not support such high bit rates.. I hope that is not the case.
Again, I suggest you Email the developer whose address I gave further up this thread.
Good luck!
Thanks Richard,
AFAIK my DAC should do at least 96K u/s to 192, but I'm reliant on switches, no lights or anything to show actual rates.
I'll play around with the BP settings as you suggested.
