Can Macbook be a music server and connect to DAC by upnp or wifi?
Posted by: comickitkit on 06 August 2011
Dears,
I am very new here and using naim only 2 months.
I bought DAC last week, but still cannot find a way to connect to my macbook by upnp.
is it possible or there is a need to buy something more to connect both of them??
Thanks
I think you might be a bit confused, depending very much on which dac you bought.
Firstly is it a DAC or a UPNP Streamer?
If its a DAC then you need to connect the macbook physically to the dac using an optical SPDIF cable with mini adaptor on one end. You then simply play some music and it will be sent to the dac.
If you have purchased a UPNP capable streamer, then you need to install some software on your mac book such as Twonky Media Server. Point it at your music and let it scan, this will then appear on your streamer for play back.
Please clarify what you have purchased
Oh... I bought DAC, but from the description from Naim, even DAC can use upnp via wifi to stream!!
therefore I am quite confused.

I understand your confusion Comickitkit, and I agree, the manual could have been more clear.
The manual here is actually talking about sources for the Naim DAC. The DAC cannot play music by itself. All it can do is convert a digital input signal to an analog output signal. The source of that digital input signal can be a Mac (which has a built-in Toslink output), or a streamer (a device like a Squeezebox Touch that connects to a server via UPnP), or pretty much anything with a S/PDIF output. That's why the DAC is often referred to as a "digital hub". But UPnP is not built into the DAC itself. If is what you were interested in, then the NDX would have met that requirement.
As Tog said, if you want to use your Mac as a source for the DAC, then you should also take a look at some of the more popular USB-to-S/PDIF converters (HiFace, V-Link, Halide Bridge, etc.), as many have reported their disappointment with the Mac's built-in Toslink.
Good luck!

PS - Just noticed that quoting posts doesn't work very well from an iPad!
Hook,
Thanks
now I got the idea.
