Nac 172 xs , alac files , only 24/96 ?
Posted by: t@rmac on 17 January 2017
Hi ,
Has someone any experience about the max resolution supported for the ALAC files ( apple lossless ) with the 172 xs ?
thank you
Now, who would have imagined that looking on the Naim website might be a good idea?
On the paper ok.........but .........what a file @192 coul be played and downsampled @96 ?
In my experience, it'll simply refuse to play them, rather than downsampling or anything like that.
It's quite easy to transcode them, though, and they'll play fine then. I set my NAS up to do so automatically during playback.
That's the thing - it's pretty easy to turn 24/192 ALAC files into something the streamers can play.
With support lagging behind for ALAC, I recommend the above- turn them into something the streamer can play @24/192.

mmmmm.....wich server on your Nas for this pretty operation ? Minimserver ?
Personally, yes, minimserver set to transcode flac and alac to wav, running on a Synology NAS.
I thought it sounded better that way, with the bonus that I could play very high resolution alac files without faffing around them. I don't have many such files, but use them occasionally when checking masters.

Downsampling would have to be done by a UPnP server.

@ Dave
I've installed minimserver on my synology ds115 , is so difficult to add ffmpeg ?
Hi. Shouldn't be. Frankly I don't remember doing it, but I'm sure I can retrace my steps. Got a meeting shortly, but will have a look how I did it afterwards.
Ok, so this is in general, but includes the ffmpeg bit.
You need to install minimstreamer on your NAS as well to enable transcoding. The instructions on the minimstreamer site should be clear enough to follow (see also the sections on transcoding and stream converter program). I believe Synology NAS drives may already have ffmpeg on them by default. If not, you can just google ffmpeg.exe to find it, and then put it in the folder the minimstreamer instructions say to put it in.
Then install minimwatch on your computer - that's basically just a program to control how minimserver & minimstreamer are set up.
Best off checking out the proper instructions for minimstreamer & minimwatch rather than having a fumbling paraphrasing of them here.
Once it's all installed, click on minimwatch - properties - system tab. The stream.converter box should have the name of the transcoding programme in it (i.e. ffmpeg or avconv). And in the stream.transcode box, you put what you want to transcode to and from. Personally, I just transcode flac and alac to wav without changing the bit depth or anything.
If that's what you'd like to do too, you can copy & paste this into the box - flac:wav, alac:wav
If you wan to do other things, the instructions are there on the minimstreamer site.
ok , thank you...... I'll try
Dave , well done ..... Minimserver on Synology with output wav files
But for now ... it's time to search a second hand 172 !
thank you
No problem, I'm glad you got it working.
Though I'm a bit confused - I inferred that you already had a 172. Congratulations in advance for when you find one, I hope you enjoy it!
