Hi-fi nonsense

Posted by: wenger2015 on 20 January 2017

I was reading a review on the focal Aria 926's Speakers  and it was claimed that they sounded better in black.....the black lacquer that is used helps the resonance, and helps in the overall performance ect ect

I was somewhat disbelieving of this claim so checked this with the good people at Naim, the answer was ' it's a load of old nonsense' ...the colour of the speakers is immaterial.

So just wondered if anyone else has experienced what I would describe as Hi-fi Nonsense ...?

D**n, so that's why my speakers stopped working!

Anyone know if speaker cable lifters actually work?

You could experiment with sections of pipe lagging cut into 2" lengths placed round the cables every 18" or so. If it works you could leave them in place and have fun explaining it to visitors while they try to stifle their laughter.

My own bit of HiFi nonsense. Homemade and cheap as chips so what the hell.

I'm sure they support the speaker cables quite satisfactorily, so:  Yes.

According to the reviews,  if speaker cables are lifted off the carpet it improves the sound?????? Really..?

Apparently on wood flooring not required?

As anyone tested this theory?

I actually lifted the speaker cables off the wooden floors.
Placed them on some bits of plastic with a bit of felt underneath. Why? So the floor wouldn't scratch when it get's cleaned

Looks like you got a cheap job lot of Chord 2Qutes and couldn't think of anything else to do with them?

I find Aeroflex works best here because it is much softer than normal lagging and has excellent damping properties. I actually put the speaker cables through this to give 15mm of distance from the power cables that run along the same wall. I then used some offcuts strategically placed to keep the cables off the ground entirely at the back of the amp and speakers.

I honestly could not tell you if the latter or former made the difference but there was an improvement. I am inclined to think gitting the distance between the power and signal cables over 4m of wall that they run parallel is more likely to be the key factor but Aeroflex costs next to nothing so why not?

If tall enough, the supports may let you dust or vacuum the floor more easily (though it is easy knock a support over). If the speaker cables are long enough, I prefer using 3M wall hooks and rubber bands to suspend the runs.

I made my own lifters too, originally for my Naca5 to get it off the floor and away from my powerlines, but I found it easier to use them on the powerlines, which gets them about 6 inches  away from the speaker cable.Sound wise,I did not hear a thing different, but I have peace of mind.

We may gest but is there are atleast a few threads in Naim HiFiCorner where users quite seriously discuss how connecting cables/wires should lie between components to get the best sonic merits.  So where does 'HiFi obsession' end and 'HiFi nonsense' begin?  Its a bit like the thin line that divides sanity and insanity.

Do you think 2 would be enough to be quorum for the forum?

Something in the back of my mind tells me that Peter Belt died some years ago, and that PWB is kept going by his wife. A quick google street view suggests that the address on their website is actually a nursing home. Rather a sad end to some interesting, if extraordinarily left-field, ideas.

I think most of this forum have potential to be officially recognised as being insane, and thus have the privilege of joining ...

Perhaps cryogenically frozen to enable the whole universe to sound better.

if taken out deep freeze Trump would be a glitch in the matrix and all our Hi-Fi wouldn't sound so terrific.

Brilliant idea...only question is what cables are going to be used with the meter? That could make a difference to the readings....
